- My friends and I went for a 5 day trip to Freeport. One of my friends owns a timeshare unit at the Ocean Reef (but a different week), so we expected to get a really nice 2 bedroom suite at check in. Instead, they gave us a 1st floor, 2 bedroom townhouse, that was outdated, unclean, and the a/c was not working properly. On the night of our check-in, we went to the pool to cool off for about an hour. During that hour, someone came through our back patio door and went up to my 2nd floor bedroom and stole my jewelry. I didn't notice my jewelry missing until the following morning. The Freeport police had to come, fill out a police report, look for fingerprints, etc. I guess we are fortunate that no one returned to the room alone during the robbery. We are also fortunate that we did not leave our passports and money in the room, instead we kept all that with us at all times. But you should never leave your beach bag unattended if you are keeping your valuables in it. We saw a person looking at our beach bags at the Port LuCaya beach, but we never left them unattended. The gym at the Ocean Reef was outdated and the machines were not functioning properly while we were there. On a positive note, after I was robbed, the timeshare staff did move us to a really nice 3rd floor, 2 bedroom suite that was updated and air conditioned. Also, the staff at the Ocean Reef were really nice...probably the best part of the resort. « less

- My cousin and I stayed in one of the town houses. We had bundles of space and our own en-suite bathrooms, which is definitely a good thing for two females LOL. The town house itself was lovely. Full kitchen facilites, nice living area with own barbaque area out side. Bedrooms were big and en suites were reasonable size.
The food was good and the staff were friendly. There wasnt many leisure facilites on site, just a pool, but we wasn't to bothered about that as we travelled off site everyday. They did have daily events though, including free diving lessons although we missed it as we arrived the day after. Watch out for the 'Time-Share' reps. They are everywhere and can be quite annoying. « less

- This is not the Lucayan, in that, it's not a jewel of a hotel nestled on perfect beaches. This does, however, have a lot more personality in my opinion than the Lucayan, and it is a lot more down to earth and real. I stayed there by myself for a week mid-February and I liked it a lot. As other people have stated in their reviews, the staff is pretty friendly. the resort itself is a bit dated, but it's clean and if you don't expect a little wear here and there you've never spent much time in the caribbean. I had a 3 bedroom villa. it was bug free and as I said, clean. The resort is attached to an active marina, so a lot of the people staying there were time-share people (like me), or yachties who's boats were tied to the docks. It's a hike to get to the nearest stores or over to the marketplace by the Lucayan, but a cab ride is easy to come by, and the resort offers daily shuttles to the beach and occasional runs to the grocery store. The on site bar/restaurant is the grouper grill, and the food was pretty darn good. Conch fritters especially were some of the best on the island in my opinion. Their chef does a real bang-up job without any air pf pretentiousness. The resort and all of the facilities are staffed by locals...good, decent, hard-working people who if you take the time to actually sit and have conversations with, you'll discover that they've all got some pretty interesting backgrounds and stories.
The scuba shop on-site is Grand Bahama Scuba, and they easily beat the bigger named shops on the island for making you feel like they actually care about you and how your dive experience was. Fred and Melinda are the kind of dive operators that will go out diving all day with you and then sit and have beers with you in the bar after the trip. They listen to your stories. They actually do care. It was great going out on the boat and into the water with them.
This resort isn't the kind of place for wild parties, it has no glitz and glamour (you can easily hop a cab and get that all you want down the road), but it is a place full of wonderful people who make you feel welcome in their home for a week or whatever, and leave you with the feeling that you had some very real interactions with people.
Some places you travel to leave you with the feeling that people were just nice to your face because they just wanted your money and as soon as your gone it's like "ok...goodbye. next!", but this place wasn't like that at all. « less
