We have learnt that the french people can be negligent but this is absolutely intolerant for a four stars hotel.
I hope that the red book omits Hostellerie Bernard the next and following years « less

- I totally enjoyed the cooking course of Rene Berard. He took us on a tour of his lovely garden, a cook's Disneyland with fresh figs, berries and other fruits, at least three varieties of basil alone. The cooking classes were full of practical and hands on tips that one could apply for home entertaining or for business. Our English interpreter, Miriam did an efficient job at translating everything including the jokes so we didn't miss anything. It was like visiting friends. Madame Berard was very gracious. I loved their breakfast with great quality and selections. Prosciutto hams, cheese, the yogurt in glass jars with fruit at the bottom. Service was courteous and personalized. The bathrooms were immaculate and modern even though the room kept to the old country feel. Rene's life story is very inspiring for a food enthusiast like me and he is so humble and kind. His kitchen assistants are also excellent and did a fantastic job. No wonder it's one of the top 10 short cooking courses to take! « less

- The food was excellent, the wine list extensive yet excrutiatingly expensive. The room was small and clean. Bed was cosy.
The spa was expensive (€35 per person for basics and not included in the room rate). The individual treatments were very expensive.
Parking in the secured car park was €12 per night. It was only the next morning that I discovered free parking 20m down the road.
The service in the hotel was atrocious. I cut open my foot on a broken tile on the step into the bathroom. The girl at reception ignored requests to send up a first aid kit or to come and inspect the damaged tile or my damaged foot. The owner and her staff neither attempted to apologise or to try and ensure that we came again.
In the morning we were both woken up (and kept awake) by banging doors and a very noisy elevator. The noise insulation was non-existant.
There was no hot water in the bathroom.
We left feeling ripped off and that our (very expensive) custom was not in the slightest appreciated. « less

- This hotel is in a tiny little village on the hilltops of Provence. The small village offers some lovely views, as well as a some good restaurants, an excellent Boulangerie and Tabacs.
The hotel is quaint, built up of 4 different buildings. Although parking is difficult, and there may not be the usual room service, we had a great stay. Our room had a beautiful view of the hills. By French standards the room was roomy, with a big bathroom. The highlight was dinner, just fantastic. We had a corner table, with full view of the hills and valley. Each course was original and just delicious. The in-house wine expert recommended a great bottle, and even printed us a list of vineyards to visit in the region (we enjoy buying wine). The hotel also allowed us to leave our purchased wine in their "Cave," so that it would stay cool.
Be sure to ask for a room that is not near the cleaning room though, we were awaken at 7:20! That said, the cleaning girl was clearly asked to be quiet the next day, as we heard not a noise. « less

- Today is the one year anniversary of the first day of our stay at Hostellerie Berard. We spent 3 nights there last August and I was thinking about what wonderful memories I had of that visit. I decided to go on the web site and take a vicarious return trip. I was surprised by the negative reviews I read. My husband and I stayed there with my sister and her french husband. We ate in both the restaurants and found both of them to be charming. One waiter was certainly better than the others, but that is not unusual. Our room was small, but had a lovely view of the mountains and the hill towns. Our breakfast was probably the best we had in France. The area around La Cadiere d'Azur provided three full days of sightseeing and we would gladly have stayed longer. If you are thinking of an adult vacation in France and you want to get out of the tourist areas, this is the place for you. It is an enchanting village with much to offer the open minded traveler. « less
