Built in 1893, the Hotel Le Royal is a grand hotel centrally sited alongside a bronze statue of Louis XIV on the expansive Place Bellacour, one kilometre from Lyon's historic centre. The 76 guestrooms located on five floors all feature either modern decor and furnishings or adopt classic Louis XV style. After reading great reviews about the hotel, it was apparently a clear choice in Lyon. What becomes obvious, however, is that service and hotel need improvement (maybe that is because of its status as a “hotellerie” institute rather than an actual hotel?).
Centrally located, but that comes at a price. Upon arrival we had no idea on where to leave the car, as there was no employee or available drop off place in front of the hotel. Once you manage to leave your car with the hotel (19 euros a day), be aware that it will take more than their promised 20 minutes to retrieve it (and that this will not be possible after 11 pm or before 7 am).
After checking in we had to take our own bags to a room (with a view) that reeked of smoke/cleaning product. After complaining to the receptionist, I was told that (although the hotel was almost empty), there were no more available rooms with a view in the category I booked – so I was offered a room at the back of the hotel with a view to a brick wall. Receptionist nonchalantly asked if I was OK with that and I answered that, between feeling nauseous from the smell of the 1st room or looking at a brick wall, I’d rather take the 2nd option.
On the second room I found a leftover candy box from the previous guest on the bedtable. I went downstairs, handed it to the receptionist – and he was completely indifferent to that.
On the first night we forgot the key inside the room. Reception guy kindly(!) offered to get it for us so we could pick it up at the reception when returning from dinner. 3 and a half hours later, upon returning from dinner, no key at the reception (that took 10 more minutes and 2 attempts at opening the door).
Apart from terrible service, the impression that you have is that rooms were redecorated (and never seen maintenance again) some 5+ years ago with non standardized furniture and that the bathroom was never reformed. Very basic toiletries await for you in a very tired bathroom (sink with cracks, tiny showerhead, very old toilet seat…).
The only positive point of the hotel, apart from its location, is the heavenly beds – but that is about it. « less

General Directions
Taxis are available from the airport; a typical taxi fare to the hotel is approximately 40 EUR. Shuttle buses run from the airport to Perrache train station, which is two kilometres from the hotel. From here, the subway runs to Bellecour metro station. Lyon is served by a bus, tram and metro network along with an automatic bike hire system that enables visitors to pick up and drop off bikes from various points throughout the city.
