Location. The Grand Cayman Beach Suites is located on Seven Mile Beach, only four miles from Owen Roberts Airport. Nearby attractions include George Town, Stingray City and Cayman Turtle Farm, all within six miles of the hotel. Rum Point Beach is a 35- minute ferry ride away.

Hotel Features. Hemingway's provides casual, Caribbean cuisine with views of Seven Mile Beach on its terrace. The trendy-styled Bamboo has a menu that includes a sushi bar, cocktails and desserts. Wireless Internet access is available for a fee in the hotel's business center. High-speed and wireless Internet access is supplied in meeting space measuring 1,200 square feet. A 24-hour fitness center is available while a European day spa provides treatments including deep tissue massage and body facials. The hotel boasts two outdoor pools, one overlooking the Caribbean Sea and next to a swim-up bar. Swimming is also available along Seven Mile Beach. On- site is a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course. Camp Hyatt at the Beach is designed for children ages three through 11. Camp fun includes visiting a tropical bird sanctuary, making sand castles and pool games. The year-round camp provides snacks and lunch.

Guestrooms. Decorated in tropical tones including apple green and sea blue, all 53 suites feature balconies or patios. Select suites include wet bars, microwave ovens, refrigerators and coffeemakers while others provide kitchenettes and dining capable of seating six. Some suites have furnished terraces overlooking the beach. A jetted tub is also included in these rooms. High-speed and wireless Internet access is available.

Expert Tip. The hotel offers Red Sail Sports exclusively providing guests with water activities like scuba diving, snorkeling and cruises.

It's been 20 years since I've been to Grand Cayman. One thing that has not changed is the laid back atmosphere and the Grand Cayman Beach Suites captures that atmosphere.
Some people have complained about the service at the hotel, and yes, the front desk staff COULD be a bit cheerier, but we're talking about a hotel with 50+ rooms... what kind of staff are you expecting? Our housekeeper was a doll (Jacqueline Rose?) but for the most part you are on your own here.
The hotel is what is left of the Hyatt Regency, which can be seen empty across the road and is still working its way through insurance battles, but the Suites made it through the storm. I visited the Hyatt as a travel agent in 1990 and the place had not even opened yet; a picture of elegance.
That being said, our room was everything we wanted it to be. Our king bedroom was so comfy, and my son loved his queen pullout. The small fridge allowed us to stock up for breakfast, snacks and drinks. It would have been nice to have a small shop on the property that sold some things but there is a Foster's Grocery store nearby that was just fine. You can take the carts from Fosters all the way back to the hotel and just leave it on the sidewalk and the grocery picks them back up.
We got a full balcony instead of a room with a French balcony and we were glad we did, because the room had a full on water and beach view. One thing to note is they are currently building on the lot next to the hotel, so the rooms with French Balconys have their master bedroom facing this, although work doesn't start till after 9AM, and by then you should be on the beach or in the water.
The bathroom was huge and the double sinks made it easy for my wife and I to coexist. I do have to say that the bath fixtures in the tub/shower are a bit different.
The beach is well maintained, and there are plenty of beach chairs, Red Sail Sports does handle diving, jet skis, and snorkel equipment, but I have a feeling the snorkel part is not a focus as they often ran out of snorkel's early in the day, and it's not so much fun to go out with vest, fins and mask but have to keep pulling your head up to breathe. If you're willing to swim out a bit there's nice reefs right in front of the hotel.
The pool bar also serves food, and, while pricey, it was good tasting and we took advantage of it a few times. They also have an incredible fitness center; much larger than I expected for the size of the hotel, but I guess that's a left over from the Hyatt.
There are plenty of good restaurants within walking distance. One thing we learned is that those honking vans with the small WB on them are actually Cayman Buses. The cost into town is $3 US per person and they come every two minutes.
As far as snorkeling; take a left down the beach and about two miles down is the Marriott. They have done a great job of creating a fake reef, and the fish seem to love it. Out the beach and to the right and you can also find some great snorkeling in front of the Ritz.
Overall, we like the Beach Suites and would go back in a heartbeat. « less
