- We spent 4 nights in the new A/C overwater bungalows the first week of January 2010 and the A/C in our bungalow did not work. It was 4 very sweaty and hot nights, even with all of the windows open. Other than that, there are no complaints about this resort or location. Tikehau is very beautiful and the water is clear, when the weather is good, the snorkelling is amazing. The new overwater bungalows are spacious, beautiful, and clean. The food at the restaurant was very acceptable for less than a weeks stay due to the limited menu items. The transportation to and from the airport by boat is good and they supply rain ponchos to everyone, which we definitely needed with the heavy rainfall we had for a few days. « less

- The place is great but the hotel does not have AC in all the rooms. We reserved a beach bungalow with AC, but at arrival they just said that they did not have more beach bungalows. They gave us as "a courtesy" an "updagrade" for a bungalow over the water. The room was nice but without AC; this is not an upgrade specially when you cannot sleep because of the 30 C degrees and the mosquitoes bites.
We stayed 4 days and during this time the personnel lokked tired after working as dancer for new year eve until 2 am and then serving breakfast, and later working as a bartender. It was clear that the hotel is understaffed and this bring a very poor service ( .
There are many other nice places that we stayed in polynesia with a more serious customer service, that we cannot recoomend this hotel. We mentioned in our feed back that they should invest in hotel maintenance and include more personnel to be able to improve their service. « less

- We stayed for three nights at the Tikehau Pearl after visiting Moorea & Bora Bora. The bungalows weren't as nice as what we experienced on the other islands but this place is so completely different and that is what makes it a South Pacific Gem! For the first night we were in a beach bungalow with a killer view and a cool outdoor bathroom! We did get upgraded to an overwater suite the next two nights and that was so much better considering we have been in overwater bungalows in Moorea and Bora Bora - we are spoilt now for life! :)
The overwater suites were HUGE and the decks were very large! Loved this place! Bathrooms were large and overall the bungalow was very comfortable. The best part though is the lagoon and the views.... the water was so warm and so many fish including sharks! We'd feed bread to the fish each day and I'm sure at one time we had a few hundred fish around our feet and legs! The views from the deck were amazing and the atoll of Tikehau is so unique! It is all coral & shell and quite different - we explored all that we could possibly explore by foot :)
The restaurant/bar area is quite nice! We had breakfast one day and wanted simply toast and a fruit tray. Out came this massive basket of bread, baguette, croissant and pastries.... we laughed as it was so much bread and such it could feed a family of six. This is what we received each morning with breakfast - no actual toast though :) Marilyn one of the staff served us Pina Coladas on our first day at the bar and then was there all three evenings and served us dinner. She was great and so personable! On our first evening she set a special table for us in the restaurant with large wicker chairs covered with flowers, greens and rocks! It was so special!
We did go into the village to get some beer/water/wine from the grocery store and wanted to stop and Chez Cindy for lunch but it was closed. We booked a private lunch on a motu for our last day but a storm rolled in and it was cancelled.... that morning when it rained we went to the entertainment room and watched a movie and ordered cheeseburgers and french fries - the burgers were so good and it helped kill a late morning/early afternoon. when you are stuck on a island with a rain storm. By afternoon we napped and "shelled" around the beach area and the sun came out for a perfect last afternoon and last evening!
Tikehau is so remote, so unique, so quiet, the landscape so different and the lagoon so blue & perfect.... you felt like you were truly lost on a deserted island in the South Pacific. I loved it and it was so relaxing! « less

We went to Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort on our honeymoon and having read endless and very mixed reviews on Trip Advisor I really didn’t know if we were going to like it or not! However, after spending a day there I wondered what all the fuss was about!
The journey to French Polynesia (from the UK) was an epic voyage. As we flew in November the winter flight schedules meant that flights wouldn’t connect easily so rather than risk missing the 4 planes and a boat we opted to make the journey over 3 days with 2 stopovers.
We flew via LA and baggage allowance was a potential issue. We packed as light as possible as we could have had a problem the Tahiti end (allowance is 20k), however, we ended up with 21k each plus hand luggage of around 8k each and it wasn’t questioned on any of our flights. The 100ml rule applies for UK and LA, however, the local inter-connecting island flights around Tahiti don't seem to mind so we took our duty free in our hand luggage.
Duty Free in LA – we got this a bit wrong! If buying duty free in LA make sure you buy it before going through security. They are currently refurbing and have a system where if you buy anything before security it gets delivered to you at the gate before you board. They are currently undergoing a refurb and the shops airside weren’t good at all. We ended up paying $28 for a bottle wine and that was one of the cheaper ones! Snacks were also quite expensive. Also, cigarettes, on the plane were really cheap (14 euro’s for 200 Marlborough Lights!) so if you smoke, get them before you get to Tahiti. Once in Tahiti, a packet of 20 can cost you up to 900 pacific francs (approx. £7.00).
Intercontinental Hotel, Papeete
We stayed here for 1 night and it was good. Really close to the airport and nice rooms. Huge swimming pool and man made lagoon with some great fish. There is no beach though. If you have time you could venture out of the hotel and turn left, walk down the road and there are some local shops including a pharmacy and grocery store etc.
Pearl Beach Hotel, Tikehau
When we finally arrived here we were greeted with wet towels and fruit juice. Much appreciated after the journey. We had an Overwater Bungalow Suite (#45) and they referred to it as the VIP bungalow. It is at the very end of the pontoon and not overlooked at all. The bungalow was gorgeous, huge bed, flat screen TV, CD/Stereo system (which we managed to plug our Ipod into!), sofa, glass coffee table so you could see/feed the fish, office desk, plenty of storage space, huge bathroom with bath, separate shower (removable washing line also in shower for any washing you need to do), twin basins, massage table (essential for in-room massages – oil is also provided!), 2 ceiling fans and A/C, huge sundeck with loungers and a shaded area with a table and chairs, own access into the water and outdoor shower. It was most definitely perfect! We received a bottle of mineral water complimentary with the room, after that they are chargeable. There are also tea and coffee making facilities and a mini bar.
The depth of the water off the deck was approx. 5ft so great for diving into and snorkelling around the coral. There was a large section of coral reef below us which was perfect to admire the fish.
The majority of the staff spoke basic english however we were the only English guests staying there that week. The majority of the other guests were locals with a few from New Zeland.
Insect Repellent
Having read lots of reviews telling us not to forget insect repellent, I went fully prepared. What I wasn’t prepared for though was getting bitten the moment I stepped off the plane – be warned! Use it whenever you are going out walking during the day and especially at night. Even in the bar area they take a liking to you.
Food and Drink
Pearl beach offers meal plan options and their website gives details of up to date prices and options. We aren’t big eaters so rather than have a huge buffet breakfast each day we took some mini cereal packs with us and bought some milk from the local grocery store in the village. This was perfect for us and we enjoyed our breakfast each day on our sundeck watching the fish. The hotel offers a free shuttle boat service to the village and the grocery store is a 5 minute walk from the boat drop off point. On our first day we got the 6.30am boat to the village and stocked up. Beer was 220 CFP (rather than 600 in the resort) and water was 200CFP for a litre (rather than 500 in the resort). We also bought milk for our breakfast, some snacks and some lovely homemade chicken spring rolls for lunch. We emptied out our mini bar and stocked it up with things we had bought. Opening times for the shop were 7am – 12noon and 4pm – 7pm weekdays. It’s closed on Sundays. When you get off the boat, walk straight down the road and you will see the store on your second right turn, there are coke signs all over it. If you continue walking past the grocery store you will also come across a Boulangie on the left.
We also came across a couple of places you could get lunch from and these were located on the road which runs parallel with the beach. If you get off the boat and take the first right turn and keep walking you will pass the post office on your right and then come across a couple of places set back a bit near the beach. They did sandwiches, burgers etc.
At the resort there is a pool bar which serves sandwiches, burgers and pasta etc along with cocktails and drinks from lunchtime to around 5pm although we found that they tended to make up/change the time they wanted to serve food until in the afternoons, sometimes it was 5pm and sometimes it wasn't. The evening menu took effect from 7pm.
Restaurant
If you are staying at the hotel you don’t need to reserve a table for dinner. The restaurant serves French food and is superb. We enjoyed really lovely meals there every night. You can also opt to have dinner in your room if you wish (obviously a room service charge is applied to this though).
The food really was very good but is not your burger and chips / pie and chips evening meal. Its that's what you like then this isn't the place for you! They have a range of fish, chicken, venison and steak all cooked well and nicely presented. The Mahi Mahi fish served with rice and vanilla glaze was lovely as was the Chicken stuffed with shrimp tails served with potato and spinach. There was also a selection of deserts including cheeses and ice cream.
Activities
The hotel offers a range of activities which don’t cost anything. Snorkeling gear is available (refundable deposit of 5000XPF required), kayak’s, badminton, Bacci Ball, Volley Ball, table Tennis, Billiards, Pool and a DVD player in the pool room.
In addition you can pay for:
Motu Picnic 8500 Cfp, Scuba diving (7500 certified, 8500 non-certified), bike hire 1000 ½ day (take them to the village and explore), Bird Island and Snorkelling tour 6500 Cfp, Deep sea fishing 30000 Cfp, lagoon line fishing 15500 Cfp, Sunset Cruise 3500 Cfp, jetski tour 19500 per person and more. Some of them come with a minimum person requirement.
All in all, Tikehau was the perfect place to relax for a week after a very very long journey. It really does enforce relaxation. We transferred to the Pearl Beach Resort in Bora Bora for our second week and that was very different to our first week but we really did love both. We would definitly go back!
Enjoy!!!!! « less

- We stayed in overwater suite 45 Nov 8-13. Suite 45 is at the end of the pier with a West and North view. Absolutely beautiful and very private, large room and deck with outstanding views. Only thing we could hear from the deck is the water and wind, increadably relaxing. Snorkling is OK from the deck but better with the dive shop.
All services were pleasant and accomodating. Everyone was personable and happy to help with requests all while providing a laid back atmosphere.
We had the breakfast and dinner meal plan. The restaurant was good to very good but the selection gets a little boring after a few days. Food and drink are very expensive but not any other options.
A couple highly recommended activities are diving/snorkling with the dive shop (manta rays and pass) and a day on a private motu.
Overall a stunningly beautiful corner of the world that is very private, very quite, relaxing and romantic. Can I go back yet? « less
