Location. The Arizona Biltmore Resort stands amid 39 acres of manicured gardens in Phoenix, Ariz. The Biltmore Fashion Park is positioned one mile away.
Hotel Features. Frank Lloyd Wright's influence is evident in the Arizona Biltmore Resort's architectural design which features turquoise-tiled pools and pocket gardens. Dining options include Wright's at the Biltmore which prepares American Lodge Cuisine enhanced with fresh, local ingredients. The Wright Bar offers beverage specialties, a selection of fine wines and a light appetizer menu. The Biltmore Grill prepares American and regional dishes. A business center houses four computer stations and offers a range of photocopy, fax, print and courier services. More than 200,000 square feet of function space accommodates events. Wireless Internet access is complimentary in public areas. A complimentary, limited-hour fitness center contains a full complement of free weights, and cardiovascular and weight-training equipment. The center offers yoga, aqua aerobics, step and sculpting classes. The Biltmore Spa offers select treatments drawn from Chinese teachings, as well as therapies based on native Sonoran Desert tribal practices. Other therapies rely on contemporary French, Swedish and Pacific Island techniques. The spa features dry saunas, wet steam rooms, spa tubs and power showers. The Arizona Biltmore Country Club offers two 18-hole championship golf courses. Eight outdoor pools and spa tubs are on site.

Guestrooms. This four-story property offers 738 guestrooms decorated in desert shades of beige, sand and ivory. Mission-style furnishings and textiles predominate, while 1930s-style lamps and a dash of western flair offer insights into the hotel's roots. Marble bathrooms contain bathrobes, makeup mirrors and weight scales. Villa suites contain full kitchens, while other accommodations include minibars. Rooms include flat-panel televisions and complimentary high-speed Internet access.

Expert Tip. The Arizona Biltmore Resort offers extras such as hot salsa demonstrations and tastings, and guided power walks across the resort's 39 acres.

I regret foregoing my usual stay at the Phoenician Resort, W Hotel, or Montelucia Resort (all within 5 miles of this Arizona Biltmore) when I was in Phoenix/Scottsdale area this weekend. Noticing AZ Biltmore had a special rate in the summer I opted to give it a try. After all, it's advertised as being part of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection. But based on my experience, the customer service at the front desk makes it more like a cheap motel. They must have cut back customer service training with the recent turn in the economy.

They messed up my rate, but was not even apologetic. Mr. Gonzales at the front desk made me feel like I was begging for the special rate when it was clearly posted on the website as their AAA rate that night. I am a Diamond member (highest level) with their loyalty program and I was treated so poorly. I can't imagine how poor service could have been if I was just a walk-in guest w/o any loyalty affiliation.

When I got to my room, there was an unsightly tray with left over food right outside my door. I called to ask them to remove it as I was expecting friends to visit. After 2.5 hrs and 3 calls later, they finally removed it.!

I was already warned the resort is a bit dated, but I was willing to give it a try since most luxury collections tend to keep their structure up to date. On the negative side, the A/C is a bit old so it made a lot of noises. On the positive side, the maintenance man was able to quickly fix it. Seems like my quick 10 hr stay at the resort only amounted to me running into every back luck I can get here. I do want to comment the valet guys are really good and very accommodating.

If I had to do it again, I would definitely go back to the Phoenician, Montelucia or the W Hotel Scottsdale. All 3 of them are staffed with well trained customer service personnel and there is no spottiness in terms of service from different areas of the resort. They know how to treat their guests as guests rather than a revenue headcount. Plus, they tend to give better upgrades to members of their loyalty program.

Perhaps there are many positive aspects of this resort. But when customer service is poor, it's dififcult to recover from it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Waldorf Astoria downgrades them in the new future as this is not to par with their collection. « less
