- Business took me to Phoenix in early March and I booked the Wyndham because it was close to the Phoenix Convention Centre and still reasonably priced.
I had asked for a King room, but was given a double Queen because the room I had requested was not available upon my arrival. The room itself was fine...reasonably clean, comfortable beds with bedside reading lamps and a decent TV. However, it had a connecting door to the next-door suite, which unfortunately was attached to the neighbouring bathroom. While I'm as tolerant as the next fellow when it comes to noise, the guy next door's volcanic eruptions of various bathroom noises, coupled with other sounds not worth mentioning here, made the early morning hours barely tolerable. I informed the hotel of the situation when I checked out and they promised to install some kind of sound baffling on the door to try and keep noise to a minimum.
Also, you should be aware that there is absolutely NOTHING to do or see in downtown Phoenix. A few restaurants offer the only respite from a steady diet of overpriced hotel food. There are no drugstores, bookstores, shopping or anything worth seeing or doing within a mile of the hotel. I had to pay $40 each way in a cab to get to Scottsdale to find a decent place to eat and to get some shopping done. The light rail line takes you absolutely nowhere worth going, except to the Phoenix Art Museum and the Heard Museum, both of which I would recommend highly.
In short, unless you have pressing business or are attending a convention, stay as far away from downtown Phoenix as possible. « less

- On the outside, this hotel looks like a rather odd, dated mid-rise hotel. With its eyebrow-type windows for each guestroom and its location in the "heart" of downtown Phoenix, the place just kind of sits somewhere between interesting, run-down, and out of place.
Once you arrive, you realize (as other reviews here will tell you) that this joint is valet-only at twenty-three bucks a pop. That was my first indication that this hotel might be thinking it is more than what it is. (The over-zealous valet attendant got on my nerves instantly ... but he was a cocky teen and I won't hold that against the hotel).
The lobby has been refurbished and has some dramatic modern glass lighting fixtures, lobby furniture with modern lines and bold colors, and an overall nice feel. You look around a bit, though, and you see some of the pre-renovation hotel under the surface of the renovation: the 70's looking escalators, elevators with faux paneling and brass touches here and there ... some of it a bit tilted ... some of it etched with random initials, tile in the common areas on each guest floor that looks like it is out of a Days Inn someplace, and wallpaper that has been bumped and scraped in the guest floor hallways.
The guest room I had on the 19th floor was a newly renovated room with a king bed (which was comfy!), a desk with lots of a/v and tech inputs, an LCD TV, an all the other things one would expect in a guest room. The colors mimic those in the lobby and some modern features like LED bedside reading lamps add to the modern touch. The wallpaper in the bathroom area is ultra modern, too ... bold green circles ... which is fine (I'm a fan of retro modernism myself), it just seems that maybe the redesign and renovation is trying too hard to take this hotel out of its dated past.
I did visit the exercise room, which had a nice selection of new equipment, a dry sauna, and access to the pool - which I also used. It's a small outdoor pool and seems a bit dated, as well, but it served the purpose for 20 minutes of laps.
The hotel's location is downtown Phoenix ... which in and of itself has few redeeming qualities. The hotel can't help this and if you have to be in downtown Phoenix, you have to be in downtown Phoenix. It's a bit of a dodgy area, a ghost town on the weekends and evenings, and a place I escaped from to other parts of the valley when I wanted good food or entertainment.
Overall, it really is a decent lodging choice and the items that bothered me probably wouldn't both most people or affect most guests' stay. Take my review with a grain of salt ... it has to do with the whole design aesthetic more than anything else. « less

This hotel has renovated rooms and rooms in need of renovation still. Be sure when you check in to inquire about having a renovated room. (there's a big difference!) « less

- Hotel is dated with recent attempts at updating. Inconsistent however -- parts of the hotel have been partially/fully updated, others not at all (like the hallways on each of the floors).
Room I'm in evidently is among the recently updated. New furniture and carpet. Fairly comfortable bed. Functional workspace and comfortable office chair. Half the bathroom (with the sink) attempts to be modern and looks fairly nice. Other half (with the shower and toilet) is very small, dated, dark and uninviting. Have a junior suite, so plenty of extra space. Overall, would describe the room as cheap looking, but fairly cheerful.
Service has been good, especially at check-in and in the restaurant. Staff seem to be fairly motivated and attentive.
Don't usually eat in hotels if I can avoid it, but have had to due to a lack of time and lack of any decent restaurants close by. Food in both the restaurant and the bar has been a bit better than would have expected. Service in the restaurant was very good.
Downtown Phoenix, where the hotel is located, is pretty much a dead zone. Nothing really worth walking to, restaurants especially. No residential housing nearby, so no one around at night. Have to take a taxi to get to anywhere you'd want to stroll around.
Hotel provides "free high-speed internet access." Yes, it's free. But nothing close to high-speed. More like dial-up from 15 years ago. Terribly slow. No exaggeration -- it's taking, on average, 30 to 60 seconds for each page to load (sometimes they never even finish loading). Outlook takes 10X - 20X the time to synch with my company's server versus anywhere else I connect from. Pitiful and a huge waste of time, especially if you've got loads to do via the internet. Given the norm today, the hotel should be very embarrassed.
Staying here for a conference which is in the same hotel. Next time I'm in Phoenix, not likely I'd stay here. Expect can do better elsewhere. « less

Lobby was nice and modern. Quick check-in.
Rest of the hotel is a little worn down - carpeting, elevators, rooms, etc. They didn't have a fridge in my room as promised, but they quickly brought it when I called the front desk. Room has free internet, but the cable was cracked. The desk was nice, but the chair was broken. The bathroom was clean but dark. One of the elevators wouldn't stop on the 17th floor - let me off at the 18th instead every time. The fitness center was surprisingly nice given everything else - about 10 very modern machines. Overall, a little less than I would have expected for a downtown hotel in the $250/night range. « less Read management response to this review.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write your review. We welcome all feedback regarding our guests experience, we use this feedback to better our property and staff. The hotel underwent a renovation updating 90% of our guest rooms and a complete renovation of all of our public areas. We did just recently update our fitness center and I am glad that to hear that our guests are enjoying the facility. Whenever there are deficiencies in our guest rooms we welcome the opportunity to fix these items during your stay. The internet cable and desk chair is something we could have fixed immediately if given the opportunity and brought to our attention. We do not have complimentary refrigerators in our standard guest rooms and I apologize if you were under the impression that there would be one available, however we do provide the option of renting one for a nominal fee during your stay. Regarding our guest elevators, we have had our elevator repair company out to provide maintenance on our elevators and they have addressed the issue regarding the “skipping floors”.
Again, thank you for your feedback and if your travels bring you back to the Phoenix area, please contact me directly. I welcome the opportunity to exceed your expectations in the future.
