Location. The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Ariz., sits at the foothills of the Sonoran Mountains. Surrounded by native cacti in the Sonoran Desert, the hotel is less than six miles from shopping at Scottsdale Fashion Mall. Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is five miles away.
Hotel Features. The hotel features open spaces, original art and native landscaping. The lobby opens onto a two-and-one-half acre water playground with 10 connected pools, a three-story water slide, and a sandy beach. Two poolside bars serve cocktails and light refreshment in the poolside lounge area. The on-site golf course provides 27-holes and is USGA sanctioned. Tennis courts, jogging paths and bicycle trails are also on site. Ristorante Sandolo, a casual bistro located off of the lobby, serves Italian cuisine overlooking the hotel's water playground. Warm reds and chandeliers accent Vu Restaurant, serving steak and seafood, while casual American meals are served at Squash Blossom. Camp Hyatt Kachina entertains children in the Native American Environmental Learning Center staffed by Hopi cultural interpreters with crafts and recreational activities. The hotel spa, Spa Avania, includes almost three acres of indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, gardens and pools. The spa's lunch service is available in the gardens amid waterfalls with black granite and earth slate décor. Spa treatments include body wraps, facials and a on-site beauty salon. The men's suite at the spa offers golfer's massage, barber hot shaves, and facials in a private space complete with a flat-screen digital television and stocked minibar.

Guestrooms. Guestrooms at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch feature balconies overlooking the Sonoran Desert, lagoon pond, lake, courtyards, or hotel golf course. Wrought-iron accessories and granite counters accent maple and cherry wood furniture. Hyatt Signature Grand Beds offer 250-thread count triple sheeting and an array of European roll and throw pillows. 37-inch LCD TVs with cable and pay movies and stereos with Ipod capability are included. Laptop compatible, in-room safes are provided. Refrigerators and coffeemakers are included. High-speed Internet access is available. Room service is offered 24-hours a day.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at the HR Gainey Ranch. I spend a lot of time researching this site as well as others to find the right hotel for us when we travel. I chose this property because of its location and the wonderful pools. I had booked a courtyard view room earlier and I felt like the price was way too high. Later, I found a prepaid pkg. that included a Regency Club room and a Hertz rental car. It was an excellent deal so I canceled the other room.
I share most of the opinions with other reviewers.
Positives: This is a beautiful property. The grounds are well kept, the pools are huge and spread out and the views of the golf course and mountains is great. The rooms/bathrooms are nice but on the small side (especially with 2 double beds). You can walk to the golf course/clubhouse.
The Regency Club was great for breakfast/snacks/drinks and is very attractive. They also have 2 computers you can use. The staff was very nice and helpful.
Negatives: 1. When we arrived at 3:30, our room was not ready. They were able to give us a different room that happened to be on the 2nd floor overlooking the bar/lounge area. This hotel has very loud bands every night. I called the front desk at 9pm and they said they play until 11:30 on Sat. nights. They were not able to move us until the morning. I guess it is my fault for not waiting for the other room to be ready that afternoon, but I don't see how they can sell those rooms to anyone who wants to go to sleep before midnight. She was very nice and agreed to comp. that nights stay. I think they probably get this complaint a lot. We were able to move the next morning to a first floor room - ask for a quiet room.
2. The spa is nice but so overpriced. $50 for a manicure? They add 19% tip! I have been to plenty of hotel spas and I know services are more than you pay elsewhere, but that is pretty steep.
3. Park your own car at night to avoid the $27 valet charge (again, not uncommon for a hotel)
4. The front desk seemed to be dealing with a lot of complaints. We were told our first night would be comp. and then it wasn't reflected on the bill. We were charged too much for golf. It took us a while to check out with all of the changes that needed to be made to our bill. I will need to check my statement to make sure the adjustments we actually made.
5. This is a big hotel with loud bands playing each night and crowds in the bar. Larger hotels typically have conventions and people walking around with name tags. If that is what you're looking for, you'll be fine.
6. We ended up not having good weather so really couldn't enjoy the pools after all. But we can't blame the hotel for that... « less

We were traveling to Arizona to explore and evaluate the possibility of moving to the area. After staying in several Hyatt properties and a Hilton resort property (in Tucson), we were ready to relax and be pampered at the advertised Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch. Our stay was anything but relaxing and the hotel's treatment of us as guests was uncaring and indifferent.

Like several other reviewers we arrived at the hotel to check-in and were greeted by a completely incompetent front desk staff. We waited in line to check in for over 45 minutes and there were less than 10 people in line at the time! When our turn came, we were offered a room that was not what we had reserved and confirmed online. We were told that a conference was being held at the resort that weekend and they had given our room to someone that had checked in the night before and had not left yet. When we stated that our reservations had been made and Paid For for over 3 months they finally relented and gave us a room, although not at the Regency Level we had paid for. Upon arriving at our room, it was cold, the carpet was dirty and sticky, and the room smelled stale and smokey even through it was a non-smoking room. In addition, the room overlooked the entry courtyard rather than the pool courtyard we had requested and paid extra for. Virtually all night there were cars and large loud groups of other guests coming and going right outside our window. The room was so cold that we had to open the window to let in warmer air and keep our teeth from chattering all night. With the noise, lights, and cold, no one in our room got any sleep.

We did have our laptops with us and fortunately had brought a wireless connection card with us, so we did not have to pay to use the hotel internet connection. At the price this resort charges, they should not "nickel and dime" you with a charge to connect to the internet.

On the positive side, the resort is beautiful. But we found it difficult to navigate around the throngs of people around the pool, restaurants, and sitting all over the various lobbies and gathering places. It seemed that as soon as you stood up, someone else sat down to take your place. Other guests were hovering, waiting to find an empty place to sit or eat. We were never able to access the spa services or the Regency Club facilities due to the number of other guests and the hotel's limited facilities to handling everyone who wanted to use them. The prices on the spa services were astronomical, easily double to triple what I paid at a similar resort facility in Tucson.

We checked out after the first night and the resort did reduce the price on our room to their "lower rate" for the same room at a non-Regency rate to compensate us for their "errors". Once again, we had to wait in line for almost 30 minutes just to check out and no one at the front desk appeared to care whether we stayed or left early from a 3 day prepaid reservation. The hotel at least did not hold us to paying for the remaining days and did refund our money. We checked in at the Hyatt Place North and had a fantastic stay with a great room, free internet, free continental breakfast, and a wonderful staff for 1/3 the price of the Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch.

This hotel needs a complete upgrade and more accurate descriptions to their services and facilities on All of the sites they show on.

We would certainly NEVER stay at another Hyatt Regency anywhere again! « less

My wife and I just spent a long weekend at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale. The hotel is nice, but the front desk staff & management are incompetent. Here is a quick re-cap. The hotel was very busy (at capacity) and it was disappointing to me that our room was not available when we arrived at 3pm on Thursday 2/18. They offered us two double beds, which was not acceptable [I requested a king when I made the reservation]. We changed into our swim suits in the lobby restroom and made the best of it – heading to the pools. We then could not access the pools as you need a key. . .so I had to go back-up and request a key to gain access to the pools. . .the front desk should have given us a key since they knew we were heading to the pools – it was their suggestion! Finally, they called us for check-in around 4:30 PM – again I found the late check-in annoying even though we made the best of it. The next major annoyance was at checkout. There were several erroneous charges on our bill, but the desk clerk said they were removed (after checking with her Mngr.). Luckily I closely checked my credit card bill as the charges were not taken care of and I am now working with Hyatt accounting to get it taken care of – just another hassle. To be told this was taken care of and then find out I was charged is extremely disappointing for a hotel of this caliber – seems shady to me. Here is a break-out of the pros and cons of our stay.

Pros:
* Beautiful grounds – lobby area and pools are truly spectacular. We visited both the Phoenician and Biltmore and we felt the grounds and lobby at the Hyatt compared favorably with those other major resorts.
* Even though the hotel was at capacity it did not feel over-crowded. Getting a chair at the pool was not a problem.
* Rooms are nice and felt updated with a modern style. Bathroom is nice; large rain shower with no bathtub, which we liked.
* Location was very good – short drive to Old Town and convenient to Scottsdale Road.
* My wife really enjoyed her massage at the spa.

Cons:
* While service staff was friendly and hospitable, it was not good service. We could not check into our room until after 4pm. They told me several erroneous charges would be removed from my bill and they still are not; although I will eventually get them waived as I’m not paying for someone else’s pedicure, it is more of a hassle than it needs to be. Hard to say whether the checkout error was intentional or not, but when they tell you they’ve removed the charges in question and then they show up on your credit card it feels shady. Without these service issues I would have rated the hotel a 4 (very good).
* Room was not very sound proof as I woke up to the guest in the next room coughing and I’m a pretty sound sleeper. Also, you can hear the band/entertainment from our room until late into the night.
* Restaurants were over-priced for the quality. For example, I had a very simple breakfast (for myself) that was $25, which is absurd. For the same $25 you can get a great buffet at the Phoenician during Sunday brunch. You will get better quality and value off the resort.

We really enjoyed our long weekend in Scottsdale and the hotel is beautiful, but the service issues put a damper on my opinion of this property. « less
