- I spent a four nights at the hotel attending a conference. The conference was very well organised and supported by the hotel conference team.
Though I only had a standard room, it was large and comfortable with fabulous views of the mountains.. Food in the restaurants was very good. The pool and sports facilities looked great, though my schedule did not allow me an opportunity to use them.
I have stayed at many hotels where the golf takes over everything and non-golfers like me are made to feel second class. This was certainly not the case at this hotel.
My one real complaint would be the high cost of internet access, which I believe was around $15/day. « less

- We have just returned from spending a long weekend at the Westin for Golf and relaxation.
The good:
1.The hotel grounds look pretty much like the photos on the website, well kept and neat.
2.The staff was very helpful and honored most requests in a timely manner.
3.The room was clean and fairly updated (but I wouldn’t rate it anywhere near a four diamond status given by AAA). You would expect better of a Westin, especially for the $$$. The bed was very comfy and the double headed shower was a plus.
4.The golf course was beautiful but not overly challenging, according to my husband the golfer.
5.Location convenient for upscale shopping and other eating choices.
6.The gym was nice, with good quality cardio equipment. The space is too small for a hotel of it size. We went early so we wouldn’t have to wait for equipment.
7.Scottsdale is a beautiful area; we only did drive through but would have like to explore the area more.
The not so good:
1.The food was simply not good. We ate at Nellie Cashman’s (lunch and breakfast buffet), Deseo (dinner), Waltz and Weisers (appetizers and drinks), and J. Swilling’s for lunch. We were disappointed at every meal. They only people who would consider any of their restaurants as good, are people would can’t cook themselves and eat out for nearly ever meal. If you have money to waste and like bland food, then you will be ok.
2.The billing is horrible. I have pending charges on my credit card (not debit) that more triple what my actual bill was. The front desk explanation was that they are holding the excess for incidentals. How can anyone have incidentals that triple the cost of the room?! What if all of the “incidental holds” put you over your credit limit? Or better yet, what if you planned to use the card for actual purchases during your trip and could not? I have never in all my years of travel had such a ridiculous amount of money place on hold on my credit card.
3.Maid service was slow. We left the room every morning at 6AM and retuned after 3PM and the room was not cleaned. It was not a big deal but you would expect it to be done when you are gone over 8 hours each day.
4.They do charge $12.95/day for internet service; they even charge you to print a boarding pass in the business center!
In summary, it is not a bad place to stay as long as you don’t have your expectations set too high. Just because a hotel is expensive and bares the Westin name brand doesn’t mean that it is better or that you will get a higher quality service. « less

“The Good...and the bad”

- What we loved:
This is a lovely resort. The grounds are beautiful. It also has a disneyesque quality about it in that you are encapsulated in a beautiful southwest atmosphere when on the property. The grounds are absolutely pristine, the rooms are clean and comfy and the beds are definitely westin quality.
The restaurants and bars were great. All the service in these areas were wonderful, fun and friendly.
The concierges really do go out of their way to help you out when you need it. My husband accidentally left his cell phone at home. It is GPS capable and had all his routes for going to and from Sedona and other sights he wanted to see while I was in my conference. When we explained what happened, the concierges were great about printing directions for him and even offered to print whatever we needed.
What we disliked:
I was here for a conference and my husband came with me. We called three times to ensure we had a king room. We were told on three separate occassions that yes we were booked for a king room. When we arrived, guess what? We didn't get a king room, we got a room with two double beds. Nobody said anything to us about this at the time of check in. We found out when we got to our room. When I called down to the service desk to find out why this mistake had been made a surly young woman named Shannon told me this, "All of our King rooms have been committed to other guests, you'll just have to stay where you are." Actually I have the option to take my business elsewhere and I guarantee that is what I will do in the future.
The hotel also appears to be secluded and private on its website. It is not, it is right in the middle of town. It is located next to a very busy shopping mall.
The rooms, while lovely were not worth the going rate of $300+ per night. They're just not. They are fairly small and really just average for an upscale hotel. The shower was teeny tiny, there is barely enough room to wash one's hair. The vanity is right next to the door and has the coffee maker on it, thus making it unusable. There is about a 2 inch gap under the door so all the light and noise from the hallway can be heard all night long. And lastly, the walls are paper thin. I swear to you, I could hear each of our neighbors as clearly as if they were sitting in the room with us.
Additionally there is a $12.00 "check-in fee". I am sorry I am just not used to paying a hotel to do me the great honor of checking me in. There is no free wifi, you have to pay between $13 and $18 to use the wifi connection in your room or in the common areas.
So that it is it, both the good and the bad. All in all it is a good hotel, I would not call it great. I would recommend it but I strongly suggest that you do not pay the hotel's nightly rate for a standard room. Book your stay through a discount site like Expedia and get a lower rate. « less

- This is our second trip to the Westin Kierland. We wanted a sun getaway and the Westin delivered again. This is THE place to go on a relaxing vacation, hang out by the pool, play golf/tennis and have nice meals. It is a good place for couples and for kids.
The Pros
The resort is conveniently located in Scottsdale. Less than 30 mins from the airport by car. Directly across the street from TWO shopping areas: 1. Kierland Commons has all the restaurants and clothing shops that one could want: Zinc Bistro (try the Ricotta dumplings), The Greene House (great desserts), North Italian, Starbucks, PF Changs, Cheesecake Factory, Tommy Bahamas, Barnes & Noble, Cold Stone Ice Cream, Chloe's Corner (inexpensive breakfast and lunch), Etch Salon (much cheaper than the Westin)...and the list goes on. Even from the farthest room at the hotel, this mall is just a 5 min walk. If you end up buying too much stuff, just ask any of the shops to call the Kierland shuttle and they will come pick you up. 2. Safeway, Wallgreens, a Salon, sports bar, Market Bistro Restaurant, etc.
There is a third shopping center just beyond Kierland Commons that has a Chipotle Mexican and a Yogurt shop, among others. All three of these shopping areas are less than a 10 min walk.
The hotel/resort is beautifully maintained and well laid out. There are at least five places to eat at any given time. The menus overlap a little, but each place has its own uniqueness to it. At the pool, you can get some nice southwestern snacks and you have to try the Prickly Pair Margaritas! Try the Polenta Totts at the golf course restaurant, the Brittle Bush.
Don't miss the bag pipes every night at 5:30p in the back courtyard. Arrive early to get a seat in front of the fire (if you are here in the winter months).
The gym has plenty of equipment (I think there is a daily charge): running, bikes, stairs, elipticals, etc. Lots of TVs and plenty of water, towels, etc. Tennis courts look nice, although we didn't use them.
The Spa is really nice and you get access to the hot tub and locker facilities all day if you get a treatment.
If you are traveling without kids, you will want to check out the adult pool. It is salt water, usually not crowded and there is a nice large hot tub. There is good service around the pool all day for drinks and food.
If you are traveling with kids, you will probably end up at the kids pool all day every day. There is no shortage of things for the little ones to do: the lazy river tube ride, huge water slide, water fountains in the patio for little kids, a small "beach" with real sand, activities every few hours (e.g. game, kick ball) for the kids. There is a great fenced in jungle gym that is covered for little ones (under 5 or 6 years)
When we came four years ago, we didn't enjoy our meal at Deseo. This year, we tried Deseo again, at their special table 32 6:00p seating (shared table, fixed price meal). We had the Kobe Flank Steak and it was AWESOME! All for $29 plus drinks. It was well worth it. However, you might have to go down to the restaurant reception to make a reservation, we were unable to make a reservation via phone or the concierge.
There is a free guided walk around the resort in the mornings. Do this early on to get the lay of the land.
The golf course looks nice (although we didn't use it). Greens fees, including a cart, range from about $120 up to $200 depending on time of year and day.
Large LCD HDTV with HBO, some expanded basic channels and of course all the local stations. Not advertised anywhere on their website: they have a charging/docking station for Phones/MP3 players in every room connected to the large screen HDTV (see photo). It has connections for RCA video, Stereo 3.5mm, VGA and HDMI; it also has AC outlets on either side. Bring your cables/adapters so that you can watch movies/TV Shows from iTunes on your own computer. Otherwise, you will be paying up to $17 per movie On Demand.
CD player/Alarm clock by the bed. Cordless and corded phones (none in the bathroom). Starbucks coffee in the room.
The Heavenly Bed is always a crowd pleaser. The pillows are a bit mushy, but you can just ask for more.
They have a Hertz Car Rental on site. If you get a cab/shuttle from the airport, you can do without a car until you need one and just rent for the day (about $40/day).
If you are a Starwood member, you can use a combination of points and dollars for your room and almost anything else (e.g. Spa, dinner). If you don't have enough points, but still want to use them, contact the hotel directly, they can usually work something out.
The Cons
Yes, as others have mentioned, they will nickle and dime you to death here. If you are trying to travel on a budget, I would recommend against this hotel...you will just end up frustrated. The rooms are expensive and they charge you for every little extra with no leeway. I would have rated it a five if not for this issue. We got double charged for internet access, charged $4.50 to have flower delivered 100 yards from the front desk. I think we even got charged to try to call their restaurant for reservations. Most old movies on demand start at $14 and many new releases are close to $20. They spilled something on me at Brittle Brush and didn't offer to comp my drink or discount anything.
This is a more "upper end" type of resort, so I guess they figure they can charge for all of this.
Stay away from rooms that are close to the lobby. This is a big hotel and there are always people milling about the lobby. Ask for a room on the third (or higher) floor facing the golf course (not the back courtyard) or for a room all the way at the end of the second floor facing the golf course. If you are a late sleeper, you might want to bring ear plugs: the doors slam hard and when guests start emerging from their rooms in the morning, this will definitely wake you up. Be careful of rooms on the ground floor: they have massive flood lights flanking every patio and if you are really sensitive to light at night, you will have a hard time blocking them out with the drapes.
The kids pool can be a bit chaotic. If you don't have kids, you might want to avoid it.
Only one espresso machine in the whole complex. Instead, take a walk over to Starbucks in the mall, they have good breakfast sandwiches also.
Phoenix airport did a huge remodel for their car rental center a few years ago and now it appears that they are screwing over travelers: expect to pay 40% or MORE in taxes on top of the car rental rate. We decided to just skip it and pay $100 round trip for AAA card & driver to and from the airport. If we needed a car, we could rent one at the hotel and pay <20% tax. « less
