Location. The Scottsdale Resort is located in a Scottsdale, Ariz., residential neighborhood. This property stands four miles from The Borgata shops and less than five miles from Old Town Scottsdale.
Hotel Features. This secluded resort features a lobby graced with original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surrounding desert terrain. Resort dining venues include the rustic, Spanish-style Palm Court. Candlelit ambience establishes the mood for dinner service that features favorites such as Maine lobster. Vista Verde's linen-draped tables are set with chinaware. This restaurant serves buffet-style breakfasts and lunches, and offers dinner menus. Sangria's Lounge serves appetizers, beer, wine, cocktails and signature sangria. A staffed business center houses two computer stations and offers fax, print and photocopy services for a fee. A total of 50,000 square feet of function space accommodates events. Internet access is complimentary in public areas. A complimentary, limited-hour fitness center contains saunas, spa tubs, free weights, and cardiovascular and weight-training equipment. Four lighted tennis courts, and volleyball and basketball courts offer recreational options. Two golf courses are adjacent to the resort. Lounge chairs and umbrellas line the two outdoor pools' sundecks. Amansala Spa offers treatments including Swedish, Hot Stone, aromatherapy and sports massages.

Guestrooms. The three-story Scottsdale Resort offers 326 guestrooms with views of the golf course, pool or garden. Accommodations feature old-world Spanish ambience with antique-style furniture and wooden window shutters. Beds are draped with 300-thread count sheets and pillowtop mattresses. Marble-clad bathrooms feature separate vanities. All accommodations include minibars and coffeemakers. Guestrooms also feature wireless Internet access (included in the resort fee) and HDTVs.

Expert Tip. This resort's Spanish flair extends to the dining experience, where classical Spanish guitarists entertain nightly at the Palm Court.

We booked a room for one night at this resort in December on Priceline.com for a bid price of $55 (plus taxes and fees, which came to about $65 per room). At check-in, we were informed that a mandatory daily resort fee of $19 would be added to cover parking, fitness center use, internet access, local phone calls, bicycle rental, free morning coffee, tennis court use, along with a few other services. After a heated argument with the hotel clerk, we were shown a copy of the Priceline agreement indicating that resort fees MAY be added to the pre-paid hotel voucher. Be sure you read all conditions in the Priceline agreement. To support their extra fee charge, the hotel even had the Priceline document on counter display. Our payment to Priceline was non-refundable and non-transferable, so we had no choice but to stay and pay the $19 daily resort fee. We were also given a card stating: “The Arizona State Liquor Control Board prohibits transporting alcoholic beverages onto the premises and also prohibits persons under the age of 21 to have access to the in-room mini-bar….” Later, we heard a lot of noise from the pool area (which is open 24 hours a day) and discovered that some guests had a cooler of beer at the hot tub and that other guests were also drinking alcoholic beverages they had brought into the hotel. We could hear the noise from the hot tub late into the night, and the next morning we discovered that you could also hear the noise in the hallway through the doors. On the positive side, our room was quite spacious, had an HD television, and nice furniture. However, the room was aging and on the ground floor and was quite dark. The additional daily $19 resort fee, plus the “take it or leave it” attitude of the hotel clerk who made it very clear that he “honestly didn’t care” if we wrote this up on the internet and “we could leave if we wanted,” made this establishment questionable in our opinion. Truly, we would have been glad to comply and leave immediately if we hadn’t already paid a non-refundable fee to Priceline. We arrived late in the afternoon, were only there for one night, and needed to drop someone at the airport the next day (the hotel airport shuttle costs $24), so we were unable to take advantage of most of the amenities covered by the resort fee. « less
