Overview
The Captain Stannard House is located one block from the beach in the quaint town of Westbrook, Conn. The Tanger Outlet Center is one mile from the inn. Chamard Vineyards is seven miles away. Just off the Boston Post Road (Route 1), the inn is midway (120 miles) between New York City and Boston, and 35 miles from Hartford.
Captain Elbert Stannard built this manor house in 1872. Notable features of the home include the cupola, where the captain’s bride went to watch the sea for signs of her husband’s return. The Great Room offers love seats, wing-back chairs, a pool table, bar and stocked mini fridge, and a stone and brick fireplace. A smaller sitting room offers a television, and a large desk with a laptop computer, printer, fax machine and photocopier. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the inn. Hand-hewn, woven lattice artwork, hardwood floors and hand-wrought iron railings grace the south porch, which offers several sitting areas overlooking the gardens and gazebo. Complimentary candlelit breakfasts are served at nine tables in the dining room, an inviting room with a fieldstone fireplace and baby grand piano. A converted barn, brought onto the estate in the 1930s, and used as the town dance hall, provides 3,200 square feet of space for large gatherings. Complimentary transportation from the train station is provided. Pets are not allowed at the property.
The Captain Stannard House offers nine uniquely decorated guestrooms with antique furnishings and private bathrooms. Beds are dressed with freshly pressed cotton linens. All rooms feature desks and sitting areas. Snack baskets with Perrier water are provided upon arrival. The inn offers in-room massages for a fee.
