Location. The Atlantic Hotel is located across the street from the beach in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The hotel is one block from The Gallery at Beach Place, one mile from the Galleria Mall, and the Pro Dive Glass Bottom Boat and Snorkeling. The Museum of Art is three miles from the hotel, and Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale Arts & Entertainment is four miles away.
Features. This smoke-free hotel features a rooftop pool and outdoor spa tub. The health club offers steam rooms, saunas, a 24-hour fitness center and the Spa Atlantic. The European-style spa offers eight treatment rooms, a full-service salon and spa boutique. The business center provides complimentary wireless Internet access and meeting facilities. Complimentary Internet access is available in public areas. A multilingual concierge staff can arrange for limousine service, valet service, tour assistance, and boat and cabana rentals. The Trina restaurant offers gourmet Mediterranean cuisine with indoor or outdoor terraced patio seating. Cocktails and lighter fare are served in the lounge. “Falling Short On The Little Things...”

There is now a gleaming strip of luxury hotels on a previously rundown portion of Ft. Lauderdale Beach....The W, The Westin, the Ritz-Carlton, The Hilton..and The Atlantic. Of these hotels, only the Ritz Carlton charged more for a nightly stay than The Atlantic. If The Atlantic wants to successfully compete in this pricing stratosphere, they need to pay far, far more attention to the "little things"...and some of the bigger things, as well. Arriving late on a Friday night, we awoke Saturday morning, and inquired at the front desk ast where we could buy a newspaper. What we received in return were looks from the people manning the desk as if we'd asked to purchase a nuclear weapon. They were speechless, looking incredulously at each other before informing us that there was nowhere in the hotel to purchase a newspaper. they couldn't even tell us which way to walk to find a newspaper machine out on the street. We also needed some Advil...for that, we were instructed to go to a pharmacy about 1/2 a mile from the hotel..nowhere could Advil be purchased on the premises. To the pool area of the hotel we went..ordering breakfast off a very limited menu. I will say only that the prime ingredient in the pancakes simply had to be salt. I can differentiate between mediocre food, bad food, and inedible food...this was clearly and distinctly the latter. After a day on the beach, we returned to our room...an absolutely beautiful, spacious, and well appointed room, I must add, to discover that our bed had never been made, our towels never replaced....nothing. No one had ever been there to make up to our room, though we'd vacated the room between 10AM and 5PM. We received the humblest of apologies, along with a $40 voucher for...a free breakfast. A generous and thoughtful makegood, though I was more than a bit hesitant to trust them with anything that didn't arrive pre-packaged. Okay...beautiful room, elegant lobby area, polite staff, sensational views of the ocean from both the pool and our room...what's the problem? At the rates that this hotel is charging ($339/night), the food should be far better...you should be able to acquire a newspaper...you should be able to purchase Advil....you should have the expectation that your room will be properly made up. There are literally thousands of rooms now available within a very small area on Ft. Lauderdale Beach...even in the middle of what should be Peak Season, it was clear enough that vacancies galore existed at all of these hotels. Why would I now return to the second most expensive of this new Big Five when I can buy a newspaper at The Hilton, have an edible breakfast at The Westin, and buy a headache remedy at The Ritz-Carlton? The Atlantic is a beautiful property, but it's not run with the commitment required to rate as a five-star hotel. The Atlantic either needs to oower their room rates by perhaps $100 a night to correspond with the level of service that they currently offer, or re-visit what truly defines a five-star hotel..it's not just about having a spa where exotic cremes and lotions can be purchased, it's also about the basics. « less
