- Shabby chique ! That is Long Boat Key in our memories. The old wooden bridge going to St. Armand Circle with fishermen hanging over the railing felt like coming home. Our first time we stayed their for 4 weeks. It must have been around 1985 and have spent many years our Xmas holidays their. The pool the beach the atmosphere. A place to hang- out and just do nothing or watching the sunset from your lazy chair on the beach. Kids can freely roam around, play tennis and make friends.4-stars or no stars, we and our now grown-iup kids have great memories hanging out in the Colony. If you are looking for chique or prestige this was never the place to be and hopfully never will! « less

- Do not stay here. I scheduled a trip for Feb 2010. They called me today to say that they were shutting down their facility, and had to cancel my reservation. The REAL problem is, they don't know when they can return my 760$ deposit. They actually encouraged me to dispute it with my credit card company. This is HORRIBLE, business practice, and they must be going into bankruptcy. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY! I cannot believe in this day and age a hotel can cancel your reservation and not immediatly provide you with a refund. I am FLABERGASTED, and going to report them to the better business bureau. « less

- This place is "complex". I will start with the GOOD things. The beach/location is simply AMAZING!! We were there with a 5 and 7 year old, and the CLEAR WATER, small waves, tidal pools, fish, dolphins, hermit crabs, shelling, AND tennis... ALL awesome!! BUT...we were in a building DIRECTLY on the beach and closest to the amenities... THis beach was so peaceful I couldn't believe. it ..and this was Labor Day weekend. We saw dolphins multiple times a day, and we just missed a manatee. The children's tennis clinics and Kindercamp (BOTH FREE!!) were really good. The pool...was the only place that was EVER crowded, but there was no need to be there with such a great beach, warm water temps, etc...on the gulf!
The suite was HUGE...it was a 1 BR suite with 2 FULL beds (NOT queens!) LOTS of comfy pillows and good sheets...but a pilled blanket that looked 10 years old (yet still clean). The living area was VERY big, with fully furnished kitchen, and a closet with 2 Murphy beds. This suite could technically sleep 6!! There were two tv's (flat screen, about 27") and a REALLY good "separation of space", for when adults wanted to relax and watch TV in the living area and kids wanted to watch NICKELODEON. (Note...not the best selection of channels and NO INTERNET ACCESS in the room). That ended up being a GOOD thing for us! The AC was MORE than adequate, GREAT WATER PRESSURE/shower massage head, and the jets in the tub were a plus. Our suite was overall, very clean.
Now..the "issues".. As you may have read in previous posts...the decor is quite aged, the appliances/cabinets are at least 20 years old (although they all worked), and the boardwalk areas are a complete mess and a tripping hazard for even ADULTS!! Shoes are a MUST, and even then, be careful...some of the boards were raised 1-2 inches higher than the rest of the surface!
NOW THE BIGGEST ISSUE FOR US!!!! There is mention of this $50.00 daily credit to be used anywhere on the property. It is ONLY available if you book DIRECTLY through the resort itself, and only a "special promotion"... AND...even THEN...confirm it with them and get the NAME of the person that you spoke with! We booked through Expedia @ $150.00/night. (for 2 nights). When I called to confirm that we had 2 beds in the suite instead of one, I specifically asked about the credit. I was told that YES...we had a credit for $50.00 to be used DAILY (or else you lose it), anywhere on the property. That person that I spoke with did not notice that I had booked thru Expedia, or just didn't care. So, since we ended up staying an additional night, and ONCE MORE confirmed that we had that $50.00 credit (and went out of our way to spend it)...we had a surprise upon CHECK OUT!! Suddenly, the wonderful time was diminished, as I spent half an hour arguing with the desk clerk, manager, etc.... about it. We had gone out of our way to confirm this along the way, and they didn't care to give us the REAL answer... We basically spent $150.00 extra on things that we wouldn't have (a tennis lesson for me....etc...) a $90.00 lunch in the Monkey Room (WAY over priced BTW)....
They ended up giving us a $50.00 credit out of the $150.00 they were supposed to. They were VERY rude along the way... At a time when you would think they would want to make things right with a guest...they didn't . In this economy?? when the place was not even NEAR max capacity, and they were dealing with a somewhat LOCAL guest who could return MANY times in the future??? I just didn't get it. I left there, after having a great time with a TERRIBLE taste in my mouth.
Would I recommend this hotel?? If you are willing to "rough it" a bit, and can deal with a lack of luxury in exchange for some of the most peaceful natural beauty in the world...and ONLY if you clarify the whole "credit" thing in advance!!! Hope this helps!!!! « less
