- Just returned from our week long trip to Longboat Key. The Colony is close to dead. Perhaps in its' heyday it was great, but times have changed and impacted this place. It really could be great once again if they would put TLC and refurbish the place. It's a great location and the beach is great. But there were only a few guests there while we were there and we even had an older couple comment about what has happened to the place! It's very beachy and low key. It just needs help. The accommodations were fine. Clean enough, but appliances need an upgrade. Our bed was like sleeping on a board! No activities going on on the beach or at the pool to entertain anyone. We left on the third of July and some new guests arrived, not a ton though, and there were activities planned but still a minimum. The restaurant is wayyyy overpriced! Tastebuds was nice for bfast each morning and the staff there was nice and helpful. The business center had only one computer working and my husband had to fix the printer while he was there. Fitness center was fine. Overall landscaping needs an overhaul as well as the buildings. The beach cottages look very rundown. Didn't see the inside. Liked the Monkey Bar/Patio, but again, pricey. Weather was okay, not the best. Even the huts and beach chairs need work. « less

- This resort is a little old and they seem to be working to resore it to top shape. The rooms were spacious, we had a two bedroom suite, we were with two friends. My husband can't walk very far and they gave us a suite right off the beach. There were lounges and tiki huts on the beach. We had lunch and dinner at the resort and the food was outstanding, as well as the sunset. « less

- This used to be a great place. With all of the litigation going on the service is next to nothing. The rooms STILL need updating and the staff is almost non existent. The Spa is closed during the week as is the tennis shop. The restaurant is no longer open for breakfast. The Continental breakfast in "taste buds" had moldy bagels and the fruit looked 2 days old. oh...it's like a ghost town there. Many times we were the only ones at the pool.
Good news...the rates are really cheap...we got $175 for a 1 br that included $50.00 resort credit for food at taste buds. And the room was real close to the beach.
I hate to see this old classic going away. Just beware that the rates are cheap, the service is scarce, but you are right on the beach and the tennis courts are still A1. « less

- I think the most important element of my review is that of Expectations.
I lived in Sarasota for 15 years, and I know the area well. My wife and I have taken annual short vacations to Longboat Key for the past 5 years, we live in Tampa now. The first 4 years we stayed at a private condo right next to The Colony (the 5 story building on the South side), which was no longer available to us to use. I wanted to take my wife and young son (2 years old) to the beach for Mother's Day weekend, so I booked a suite at The Colony.
I think it is very important to note what has happened with this resort in the last year. Without getting to deep into it, the HOA shut down the resort as they were no longer able to operate at a positive cash flow. They did reach an agreement with the condo owners and reopened the resort at limited capacity.
It is my guess that the resort was operating at 15% capacity. All of the "special" suites are closed, and probably only 4 buildings are open. Because they are operating at such a low capacity, it shows all over the resort (i.e., limited items in the store, no more breakfast, and limited maintenance). It is kind of sad, just like Mexico at the peak of the "swine flu" scare.
There are 2 main attractions here: tennis and the beach. That is where your expectations should be. Some will argue that I missed a third, the dining room; however we always go to St Armands Circle for dinner, so the dining room does not apply to us.
Tennis=Fantastic;
Beach=Fantastic;
Condos=Dated, but if I wanted luxurious I would have stayed at the Ritz;
The resort really does need a cash injection in the next 5 years to bring the accommodations up to par, but we go there for the beach! « less

- I have stayed at this resort for years and it hurts to write this review since my family has always loved our past stays. each unit in the hotel is individually owned. The management has been fighting with the owners to rennovate the resort . the resort is falling apart and to me is no longer even 2 daimonds. everything from the landscaping to the units are in bad shape and not worth the money you pay. They really pushed me over the edge when they scheduled a party for guests and people outside the resort and closed the pool after 5 0clock. you had to pay $40 to go to the party or couldnt use the pool. the resort is all about the pool and the beach. whe my nephew tried ot use the pool without going to the party they turned him away. they never told us at booking that this was the case. The people in the restaraunt were rude i believe because we had kids that were dressed in shorts. it pains me to say it but I would avoid the hotel at all costs . there is the long boat key club and a great hotel on lido beach. we also have been getting great rates on houses for rent in anna marie island « less
