- Thurston Park is absolutley charming. The local resturants, shops and music venues were an added surprise. The location of this B&B is Pefect !!! We booked a Queen Size room on the second floor of the Main Building...when I arrived the Owner ,Carlos had upgraded us to the Larger King Size room. We stayed two nights. I love B&B's and the charm of them are is that they are not perfect, but they are cozy. We loved the room and we loved our time there. Would we go back? Yes! I would like to mention a few things in hopes that the owner will make some needed changes.
1) Ice would have been nice if it could be made available to the guests. After business hours there was no ice available. Durning business hours I went to the refrigerator and the ice maker either wasn't hooked up or working. There was ice in a bag from a store that was unopened. Carlos said I could go across the street to the Pizza place and use there ice machine.
2) The water pressure in the shower was very low or the shower head needs to be replaced.
3) The carpeting in the room was very dingy. It looks like it could use a steam cleaning.
4) The porch light is on a timer and it goes on when it gets dark and stays on all night until about 6:00am. Great for coming back to the room when it's dark, but not for sleeping.
The shade on the door did not block out the light coming into the room when I was trying to sleep. A better black out shade would be perfect.
5) I do understand the dilema about the limited breakfast due to food service licensing, therefore there wasn't much available for breakfast other than carbs and pastries.
My boyfriend and I brought our own hardboiled eggs. « less

- We looooooved our stay at the Veranda B&B. Carlos, the innkeeper, was incredibly hospitable and welcoming from the moment we walked in. The grounds and rooms are beautifully kept, manicured and groomed and everything is as comfortable as it looks. We enjoyed our first night so much that we decided to stay another night and explore the Thorton Park area even more. We will hopefully be back someday and recommend it to anyone who wants to get away, as it was the perfect romantic getaway. « less

- First let me say, if I can avoid it, I NEVER stay at chain hotels-not of any calibre. So, my review is skewed due to my preference in accommodations.
I really enjoyed the two nights we spent at the Verandah. We stayed in the "Delaney", which is a roomy downstairs suite next to the pool and patio. It had a large room, large bathroom with large shower and a small mini-kitchen area with sink, mini-fridge, microwave and coffeemaker. The bed was gorgeous - huge four post - and very elegant with super soft bedding and tons of pillows.
We were not able to take advantage of breakfast as it did not start early enough for us (we had somewhere to be at 8:30am), but the room where breakfast was served is typical B&B - meaning it's a single big table and dining area that is used communally by all guests.
This B&B is really a complex of buildings - each with its own character and charm - all built around a courtyard/patio/pool area. The pool is small and doesn't get deeper than 3 feet - so it is really only useful for a "dip". The hot tub nearby is nearly as big as the pool! So, depending on the weather, you've got choices to cool off or warm up. We tried both! The grounds are well tended and provide privacy - with many trees, flowering bushes, growing vines, etc. It's shady and serene and gives you the overall impression of a hidden garden or hideaway.
If you have any issue with "sounds" outside or are a light sleeper, you may want to bring along a noise machine or ear plugs. It's not terribly noisy - but I am a very light sleeper. I found I needed some "white noise" in order to fall asleep.
The neighborhood is one of the main reasons we chose this place. Thornton Park and the streets around this particular B&B are just wonderful. I really enjoy historical neighborhoods that have charm and age and a "story" - and this neighborhood provides that abundantly. We took a walk around Lake Eola - only a few blocks away - on a cool evening with a light wind blowing. The lake is beautiful - and is just "this side" of the downtown area - so if you want REAL hopping nightlife, it's close enough. But on our side of the lake was the quiet, residential Thornton Park area with nice shops, interesting eateries and cobblestone streets. So, if you like that sort of thing, this is the place to be.
For me, this is a great place - and I would stay there again for sure. If you really only like chain hotels and everything to be the same - then you may not be happy here. « less

- I checked out after spending one sleepless night there. I travel frequently, and I have never stayed in shabbier accommodations. Even inexpensive bed and breakfasts in other areas have offered more than this one. The only amenities my room had were an ironing board, wireless Internet connection, and a hair dryer. There was no coffee maker or microwave, and ice was only available during staffed office hours of 9:00 AM -7:00 PM. The room was very dirty and dusty. The bathroom had a pedestal sink and only a tiny, dusty shelf (which I had to prop up so my toiletries wouldn't fall off) above the toilet. The shower had caked soap on the wire soap rest, and mold and mildew could be seen in other areas. The bedside lamp and clock radio were connected to a wall outlet with a cheap extension cord, and if I turned the lamp off with the room switch, the clock radio went off, too, and the time was reset to 12:00 when turned on again.
After going to bed I wasn't able to sleep due to bright lights directly outside the room on the "veranda" and the noisy air conditioner in the room. To top that off, I was worried about having to get up early enough to move my car out of the lot I was "permitted" to park in until 6:00 AM because there is little parking provided for guests.
For breakfast, healthy choices were very limited ... yogurt, apples, bananas, two types of cold cereal, orange juice ... but there was an abundance of pastry items. And there was only one, long table for all guests to use.
I would NEVER return to The Veranda nor recommend it to anyone. I went to the Crown Plaza on Colonial Drive for the remainder of my 5-day stay. My room there cost $10.00 a night LESS than the Veranda, and I felt like I was in a luxury resort. The Veranda needs to literally clean up its act and provide a higher level of comfort for its guests. « less

(second floor). No assigned parking. Location is convenient. Breakfeast was very limited (mostly carbs/no protein) and one large table is shared by all guests, which provides no
privacy. Pool is present, but not for swimming and hot tub not of much use in may when temperature was in 90's. ok experience. « less
