Location. Reminiscent of an Italian fishing village, Universal's Loews Portofino Bay Hotel is located in Orlando, Fla., in the center of Universal Studios Orlando. The hotel is two miles from Wet 'n Wild and International Drive. Special theme park benefits include Universal Express ride access to bypass regular lines at most attractions and rides, complimentary resort-wide transportation via water taxis or shuttle buses and priority seating at select Universal Orlando restaurants.
Hotel Features. Designers and craftsmen painstakingly modeled the ambience of Universal's Loews Portofino Bay Hotel after the Portofino village of Italy. Elaborate paintings decorate exteriors, Vespas are parked in the main piazza and faux fishing boats are anchored in the harbor. Dining options include buffet-style breakfasts at Trattoria del Porto, poolside drinks at Splendido Pizzeria and family-style dining at Mama Della's Ristorante. Three themed swimming areas include the Villa Pool complete with private cabanas, an aqueduct-styled waterslide and a hillside pool. Mandara Spa at Portofino Bay displays a vast menu that includes Balinese massages, lime and ginger body treatments and marine facials with the Elemis product line. Evenings bring movies under the stars at the hotel's weekly poolside "dive-in" movies. The main piazza hosts a quarterly wine festival and "Harbor Night" with live jazz. Campo Portofino provides supervised children's activities.

We stayed at the Loews Portofino Bay hotel because it is rated as a Four Diamond hotel by AAA. Many great hotels have been listed as four diamonds (Ritz Carlton, etc...). And with a price tag of $340 a night, you expect the best. We had stayed here three years ago and we had so much trouble with the service at the hotel, that we thought we'd never come back. But after reading the reviews on trip advisor, we thought we'd give it a second try. We were very pleasantly surprised by how friendly and courteous all of the staff were. This was a big improvement. All of the information that we were given upon check in and in our dealings with the front desk was accurate. Amy checked us in and she was very professional and answered all of our questions. She was great! We had forgot to request a newspaper upon check-in and so I called the operator and asked her to transfer me to the front desk. She informed me that they were busy, but she asked if there was anything she could do to help. I asked her if she could make sure that we get the New York Times every morning. She said that she would do that, however the next morning, the paper wasn't there. We were in a rush to get to breakfast (there was a omelet buffet, nothing to write home about), so we didn't call down. The second morning, the paper was outside of our door waiting for us. A bit inconsistent, but I'm sure if I had called down, they would have tried to send one up. On Saturday, it was raining and we didn't want to go to the parks. We decided to just nap during the afternoon before our trip to the gym (good gym with free weights), we had heard a person letting the doors close as they went from room to room. When the doors close in the hallway, they slam. And you can hear it resonate up and down the corridor. The rooms were very silent, otherwise. I went out into the hallway to ask them to quiet down. I thought it was children playing or something. It turned out to be a member of the housekeeping staff. She was cleaning a room and propping the door open with the lock. As she went to her cleaning cart, she allowed the door to slam on the lock and it made a great deal of noise. Once I talked with her, she quickly changed the way she was closing the door, so that she didn't make much noise. She was making a great deal of noise. We also decided to pay for internet. They had a deal for $25 you could get 3 days of service. After taxes, it ended up being $29 dollars. That's not too expensive for HIGH speed internet, however when I clocked the download speed, it was only .5 mb per second. Ug. The upload speed was 2.3 mb per second. I thought that was really odd to have such a high upload speed and such a slow download. Not sure that was worth $10 a day for such slow (seemingly dial-up) service. Lastly, we had noticed that some of our sheets, towels, and robes had holes in them. I even noticed that the curtains in our rooms had small holes in them as well. I'm sure that they keep things as clean as possible so they need to wash them well, but I didn't like the fact that they weren't replaced after a certain period of time. All in all, we had a good time. I think that this property has come a long way since 3 years ago, but there's still room for improvement. And at $340 a night I don't expect pure luxury, but I would appreciate a robe that doesn't have holes in it, and a cleaning staff that is aware of the noise that they make. Lastly, upon check-out we noticed that we were billed for something that we shouldn't have been. We mentioned it to the front desk person and they verified that it was a mistake and quickly removed it from our bill. They were very pleasant and helpful, despite the mistake. « less
