- We stayed as part of a coach party and we were all given rooms in the newly refurbished more modern part of the hotel. These rooms were completely new inside including the ensuite.Very tastefully done. They are in the middle of a complete refit so it looks chaotic from the outside but the lounge and bar areas that had been finished were of a v. high standard. The restaurant was also v.light and airey. The evening meal we had we couldnt fault and the buffet breakfast was v.substantial with every choice you could want from fruit, cereals, yoghurts, juices, pastries, full english and freshly made toast! As there was a full coach load of us staying they coped with us all having to be out of the dining area by 9.00am.
The staff were friendly and helpful. I would say that they are coping well in what is a chaotic time with the refit but these things have to happen in order to achieve an comfortable outcome.
When i read some of the older reviews of this hotel i had concerns about what we would find but my fears were unfounded. A great room, comfy bed with comfy pillows(something ive never found whenever ive stayed anywhere else!) large flat screen tv and internet access is on its way too! « less

- We chose this hotel because it offered free parking facilities onsite and had understood from other reviewers that it was relatively quiet because it is located outside the city centre. However, these two advantages did not compensate for the many negative aspects we encountered. Firstly, the overall service was particularly unfriendly, from the receptionist on arrival to the poor service at breakfast - we got the impression that the staff liked upon guests as a nuisance. Secondly, the room was dark and generally dirty - the carpets were old and worn and there were stains on the old wallpaper; it was definitely below the standard we had in other hotels at the same price level. Thirdly, we got the impression of an old, poorly maintained hotel. For example, there was a dank, musty and unpleasant smell in the many corridors we had to pass through to get to our room - we had to walk quite a distance, going up and down stairs because there was no lift, and with heavy bags this was not easy (the management said this will be fixed when the renovations are completed). There were also extensive renovations going on, so there was noisy work and dust everywhere. Fourthly, the breakfast was of very poor quality: there was a very limited selection compared to what we found in other hotels and the food wasn't well prepared - the scrambled egg was burnt and the sausages and fried eggs were sitting in what liiked like a layer of fat. Regarding the renovations, we agree that they are necessary to bring the hoetl up-to-date, but we suggest that it would be better to shut down the hotel while work is going on. It was quiet at nighttime due to the hoetl being located outside the city centre- great for our purposes but probably too far out for anyone wanting to enjoy yhe Newcastle nightlife. Overall, this was an unpleasant experience for us and compared to the four other hotels we stayed in on the same trip, this was the worst (although we paid the same price).
Liked best: free parking onsite, quiet because of location outside city centre
Liked least: unfriendly service, old and dirty room, limited and badly cooked breakfast « less

- This is the 2nd time I have stayed at the hotel (first time was just after the Cairn Group had taken it over last year). As others have said, location is ideal for central Newcastle. I have been unfortunate enough on both visits to be given one of the rooms that has not yet been refurbished - clean but fairly scruffy especially the bathroom. I paid GBP 65 for a double room with singe occupancy including breakfast. Catering - breakfast is excellent, dinner in the restaurant not better than average (and the vegetable soup was absolutely tasteless). Service generally average.
Based on location, price and cleanliness, I would recommend the hotel (looking forward to see what it is like when the renovation is completed). « less

- The location is convenient to Newcastle University, which is why I selected it. The hotel was being renovated during my stay. The hotel combines a Victorian era building with a newer section from perhaps the 1970's. My room, located in the older section of the hotel, was very small but newly redecorated. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept well. There was no lift, and it took a myriad of small hallways and stairways to get to my room. The common rooms were fairly simple, and it looks like they are going for a modern decor in the renovation. I didn't eat at the hotel. I considered breakfast, but it was 10 pounds for a basic and unappealing looking buffet. The booking site I used showed photos of a pool and fitness center, but I was told at check-in that these were long since closed. « less
