Location. The Reunion Resort is located in Reunion, Fla., next to Disney's old-fashioned town of Celebration, Fla. The resort is six miles from the entrance to the Walt Disney World Resort.

Features. Stretching across 2,300 acres of rolling hills, this expansive resort offers a variety of architectural styles, from Floridian Conch style to Colonial style. The resort features three restaurants. Forte is a classic steakhouse with an elegant setting. The Eleven restaurant offers casual tapas-style dining and entertainment. The Clubhouse is a seasonal restaurant overlooking the golf course. The Seven Eagles Pool Pavilion offers a poolside bar and grill. The resort offers a 12,000-square-foot Executive Conference Center with a ballroom and break-out space, and a 4,700-square-foot events center. High-speed Internet access is available. Three Signature golf courses designed by Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, wind throughout the resort. The five-acre water park boasts a multi-level water and swimming pavilion featuring a zero-entry pool, lazy river and multi-story water slides. The colorful, tropically landscaped pool complex also offers tin-roofed gazebos, shade areas, interactive children's pools and a wooden boardwalk. A fitness center is available in the clubhouse. The resort offers a boutique spa with therapeutic massages, including Swedish, deep-tissue and golfers' massages, a manicure and pedicure room, and hair salon. In-room massages are also available. The tennis center features six lighted courts and tennis pros on staff. Tickets to area theme parks are available at the concierge desk. Pets are not allowed at the property.

Guestrooms. Villas at the resort feature living areas with sofa beds. Gourmet kitchens offer granite countertops and complimentary kitchen starter kits. Select accommodations feature patios or balconies overlooking one of the golf courses or gardens. Master bedrooms include private baths with oval spa tubs and bathrobes. DVD players, CD players and complimentary high-speed Internet access are provided. Living rooms and bedrooms feature 25-inch televisions with cable channels. Washers and dryers are provided either in the unit or in a common area of the building. Daily newspapers and maid services are complimentary.

Expert Tip. Children ages four to 12 are welcome at the Kids' Crew Camp, offering supervised scavenger hunts, nature hikes and pool activities.

Reunion is an interesting place. The grounds are immaculate. The Grande is a very impressive building. The pools, water park, tennis facilities and golf and all first class. Staff are pleasant and helpful. The complex was the Ginn Reunion Resort, then more loosely named Reunion Resort (dropping Ginn due to image problems, perhaps a little unfairly) and now is Reunion resort and club, Wyndham Grand Resort to reflect some recent involvement of Wyndham.

The resort itself is huge with many apartments and villas. As with all resorts in this area, some are lived in but many are owned by investors and many are for sale as short sales or in foreclosure. But this should not put you off. Those in the rental programs are generally furnished to a high standard and are spacious. The Grande itself has fantastic apartments with great views with one or two exceptions. We booked an apartment on the seventh floor and were pleased to know the number in advance. There are a few that would be disappointing although any on the 5th floor or above or at the ends of the building should be fantastic. We are not owners or investors and just wished for a good value apartment. We found this through Lisa Morris [lisa@morrisinternationalrentals.com] and were more than happy with the service.

There were a few minor problems on arrival and these were sorted quickly and efficiently by the management company. Note that use of the water park is rationed as people using the apartment are house guests of the owners and they have an annual allowance for use of the facilities. There is a one off mandatory cleaning fee at the end of a stay but more frequent cleaning is available as an option. We arrived to a spotless apartment and were happy to go without additional cleaning.

Reunion is a cashless resort. We found the restaurants were happy to accept credit cards and there are many excellent eating places within a short drive. There are also two Publix supermarkets close by and a Walmart not too far away for those who like to choose from twenty kinds of everything, be it tennis rackets, navigation systems or vitamins pills!

We flew to Sanford with Thomson and hired a car from Alamo. Both were excellent. In my experience, Thomson premium is on a par with Virgin or BA premium. The drive from Sanford to Reunion is straightforward and takes about 30 minutes. You can use toll roads (allow approx $4.50 in change) or use the I4 for free. The distances are similar although the toll roads can be less congested. And compared to the UK, petrol is virtually free.

We have stayed at Reunion three times. Once in a three bedroom apartment in Centre Court ridge, once in a three bedroom apartment in a Seven Eagles town house and now in a two bedroom apartment in the Grande. All were excellent although the last was the best value and had the best views by some distance. We will go back. « less
