- There's nothing fancy about this place, but it's perfect if all you want to do is hang out at the beach, eat, drink and relax. My wife and I spent two nights in a 4th floor Lanai Suite and really enjoyed our stay. We looked at an upgrade to an Antigua Suite, because the desk clerk offered it at a discount (an extra $35 per night versus the usual extra $50 per night). After looking at both suites, we decided to stay put because the Antigua Suite was more a "bed and TV" upgrade than a room upgrade. The rooms were essentially the same and it didn't seem worthwhile to spend an extra $70 for flat screen TVs in lieu of tube TVs, and a King bed in lieu of two doubles.
Anyhow, our Lanai Suite was more than adequate. It was clean and fairly well maintained - although the lock on the patio door was severely corroded and offered less than adequate security. For that reason, you may want to take a suite above the ground floor. I'm not making any judgements about security at the hotel, or in the area in general, I'm just saying that if I'm sleeping at street level in a strange place, I want to know that my doors are going to let me sleep well. Since we were on the fourth floor, and since the beds were so comfortable and the grounds so quite, we slept real well.
Everything in the room worked. The A/C blew cold and relatively quiet. The shower worked fine and there was plenty of hot water. There were TVs in both the bedroom and the sitting room, and they both worked well (and there were a couple of free HBO channels into the bargain). Also, I really appreciated having a small safe en suite; we didn't spend much time there, so it was gratifying to know that our valuables had some extra protection.
The hotel amenities were great - although we didn't use them. The parking was ample (and covered) . The staff was courteous and friendly.
But like I said, it's all about the location. It was great being right on the Gulf. And there are lots and lots of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. If you like Italian, check out Vito and Michael's, a small place about a mile north on Blind Pass. We also found an excellent mall (Tyrone Square) about 10 minutes away. And since our whole purpose for being there was to take in a couple of Red Sox games, we were happy to be 15 minutes away from Tropicana Field. Getting from the hotel to the park was a can 'o corn.
At bottom, we found the Alden Beach Resort to be a good value at $115 per night, and are happy to recommend it. We've been coming from the Space Coast to the Sun Coast for years to watch our beloved Sox. We're going to add the Alden Beach Resort to that tradition. « less

- For the price we paid and the beachfront location, the Alden is a good deal. There is plenty nearby, the pools are clean and there's even a BBQ with a patio for guests. Unfortunately the elevators were down (luckily we were only on the 2nd floor), but with 4 young kids you can imagine the added inconvienence. My pet peeve, it could've been cleaner. No horrible smells or anything, but the vents had dust and mold, and the carpets turned our feet black. It was "surfaced cleaned", behing the couches and lamps were neglected. We did have a great time, and again it was a great value. But if you are a "neat freak", spend a little more and stay somewhwere else. Do not even attempt the sofabed-hard as a rock! « less

- You are only allowed one parking space per room. Visitor parking accommodates maybe 10 spaces. We had a family reunion/ 75th birthday party for my mother. When guests arrived on Saturday evening for the cook-out/ party. There was no place to park and many gave up and returned home. The staff would not help out with extra tables and chairs. We had to return to our homes and get extra tables and chairs. It was very frustrating. They offer satellite parking which is about 1 mile away. They give you a card for free shuttle but you may wait up to 40 minutes for a ride. The stupid part is that they have an overflow lot that is always empty -- open it up for visitor parking. « less

- My family and I had originally booked our 5 day vacation at a neighboring hotel based on some hyped reviews and some misleading online photos (The SiRATa). We found ourselves desperately trying to switch hotels the day we arrived. We stopped in at The Alden and the staff was very accomidating. They showed use their rooms and gave us a better deal that the hotel we originally booked. The rooms were nice and the view was great. They literally saved our vacation plans. The staff was very friendly and the hotel is very accomidating to families. We have a one year old son who had no problem naping in our room. The way it was layed out allowed the adults to sit in the living area, while our son slept in the next room. Good hotel with great rates. « less

- I first visited The Alden in 2007 on a vacation with a girl friend. We went back the next year, but the year after that I traveled with my husband. Our flight landed early and we tried to check early but were unsuccessful. It was no problem. I was familiar with the facility so we changed in the bathroom into our swim suits and hung out by the pool with our drinks from the cabana bar. This was an excellent way to start our vacation! The rooms are clean and large. I love the fact that the rooms have kitchens. Being able to make breakfast at out leisure is my idea of a laid back vacation. The staff is attentive and does a great job cleaning the rooms. This is our place to stay each year we go to St. Pete Beach! We will be visiting this October. « less
