Set on 200 acres, the Hutchinson Island Marriott is adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean coastline. Guests are less than one mile from the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center and seven miles from downtown Stuart, Florida. Air travelers are 45 miles from Palm Beach International Airport.
The tropical Hutchinson Island Marriott welcomes arriving leisure travelers with swaying palm trees, outdoor ceiling fans and bellhops in traditional island clothing. The main hotel building is located one-quarter mile from the beach, and complimentary shuttle transportation is provided every 20 minutes.

The resort features a private beach and a 77-slip marina where guests can arrange fishing excursions. Ideal for tennis enthusiasts, the resort also features 13 lighted tennis courts. We have stayed here more than ten times and just love it. Unfortunately this time there was a mix-up in our reservation the first night. In stead of being given a beach view room as promised by telephone we were given a room in the main hotel because we were ther on points, we were told. We got a very dated looking room in the main hotel overlooking the Jacuzzi (noisy). Room was badly in need of refurbishing (dirty doors, carpet burns). Very disappointed, I went down to the desk to complain again that our reservation was for Sandpiper (their beach-side building) and that the room we were given was in poor shape. I also complained that our pre-order for fruit, soda and a rollaway in the room had not been honored. Desk clerk gave me a bit of a hard time (maybe having a bad day?), telling me Sandpiper might be available in five days (note, we were there on Marriott points but I had been promised we were in Sandpiper when I made the reservation). Excuses were given for the missing food. Upset, I got on the computer and complained directly to Marriott on their web site (I am Gold preferred). Fruit and soda finally arrived after dinner, the rollaway never appeared. However, the very next morning we received a call from the hotel manager who apologized profusely and found us a lovely room in Sandpiper with an ocean view on the top floor, overlooking the pool. From then on things were more as in past visits. Our Sandpiper room was recently refurbished with granite countertops and new appliances. (Tub had not been replaced nor had light switch plates and both probably should be, but were okay). Beds are very comfortable, room very clean, and the sound of the ocean waves can be heard from the room. Love sitting on my balcony admiring the sunrise. As others have noted there are issues out here such as slow housekeeping, coffee packets not being refilled, or used bath towels not replaced, minor but annoying. However, over the years we have made ourselves at home and go right to the housekeeping carts and ask for what we need. They seem to be around almost all day which is actually an advantage when you are missing something. I have even gone to the housekeeping storage room downstairs. Sounds strange but makes me feel at home to be able to do this. It is just so nice and relaxing staying out at Sandpiper that it's worth it, and we have learned to check for any oversights so as not to get angry. We just like to think of Sandpiper as our own little place on the beach so take care of ourselves. Also, we have found if we leave a small tip every day for housekeeping with a note for what we need they will overwhelm you with extra coffee, shampoos, etc. We usually skip the elevators, preferring the stairs and always request a room near the stairs for convenience and to give us some exercise. Note that the South side of Sandpiper (even numbers) faces the pool and gets lots of sunshine but possibly noisier. The North side is quieter and faces the ocean as well but it is darker. Lower room numbers are closer to the ocean. Beach chairs and umbrellas are free (there used to be a charge), but now the hotel charges $10 a day for parking. Have to agree this charge is ridiculous, especially since you are parking yourself and usually out in the open. Sandpiper has some under building parking but very limited. One problem was lack of beach towels every morning. Also, all the rude guests who claim chairs early in the morning then never show up. Tiki bar staff just wonderful. Sandpiper pool is very small and jammed with people, Jacuzzi overwhelmed with small children as well even though there is a sign against it. We usually just went to the beach which is lovely and kept very clean. Bathtub Beach nearby is great for small kids. Main hotel pool larger, not so jammed with people unless there is a convention. Many great restaurants nearby. Our favorite is the Prawnbroker, especially for seafood. Conchy Joes a loud, fun place to try but may have a long wait. Dophin House on the river is okay, used to be the Francis Langford and lots of interesting old Hollywood pictures. Alice's Restaurant in Cedar Point Plaza (two bridges into Stuart) great for breakfast and you can sit outside. Grocery store very close. Hotel Tiki bar food okay, usual resort prices, disappointed they stopped making onion rings. Tropical drinks pricey as well. We usually buy some extra rum in town and add to our own drinks. Main hotel restaurant VERY expensive so we usually skip it. Nothing different from any other resort there but they really should have a second, lower priced option for dinner on premises. Main hotel used to have free coffee in the lobby in the mornings--I used to love to walk over there for a cup every day--but now you have to buy it at Starbucks prices, so forget it. Just drink the room coffee. Agree with previous poster don't order the hotel pizza. Ask staff for local place that delivers, cheaper and tastes better. Note, the website advertises the main hotel to be 1/4 mile from the beach. In reality it is a full 1/2 mile. Walkable, but might be difficult for those with disabilities or small children. They do have a little shuttle very 1/2 hour or so, very convenient. Not much to do for teenagers, but hotel gave us a hook up for our son's XBox. Daily internet charge but that is normal for resorts. A shower is available in the pool restroom but they no longer supply it with soap or shampoo. On our last day we had a late flight and requested a very late check out, which was honored. Better than trying to freshen up in the humid pool bathrooms. This is a great place for a relaxing beach vacation. Just understand this property is not owned by Marriott, only managed by them, and you need to be assertive in asking for what you need. Staff is generally very accommodating, warm and friendly. Many have worked there for as long as we have been coming there, work very hard, and will bend over backwards for the guests. « less
