Sun Valley Lodge

The Sun Valley Lodge in Sun Valley, Idaho has been a favorite destination for ski enthusiasts since 1936. Sun Valley Lodge was opened to the public in 1936 after an extensive search by Count Felix Schaffgtosch who was hired by the Union Pacific Railroad to find the perfect spot for a grand American resort. Seven month after the lodge was opened, the resort was an instant success and Hollywood royalty such as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Claudette Colbert, Bing Crosby and Gary Cooper became regulars of the lodge. World champions including Don and Gretchen Fraser, Gracie Carter Lindley and Andy Hennig used the mountain for Olympic training.

In honor of one of sun valley's all-time favorite friends - Janet Leigh - "Leigh Lane" was dedicated on Seattle ridge December 22, 2005.

The first American to capture Olympic Alpine ski medals in 1948 was Sun Valley's own Gretchen Fraser in 1948.
