Location. The Inn of the Governors is located in Santa Fe, N.M., within one-quarter mile of Santa Fe Plaza, Loreto Chapel and West de Vargas Park. The hotel is less than one-half mile from Bridge of the Hidalgos Historic Site, New Mexico Capitol Building and Institute of American Indian Arts Museum. Museum of New Mexico History Library and Sweeney Convention Center are just over one-half mile from the hotel.
Hotel Features. Inn of the Governors opens to a lobby with deep burnt orange tiled floors, exposed brickwork, wooden wall paneling, wooden ceiling beams, a globe, and sofas and chairs. The hotel offers complimentary daily buffet-style breakfasts and afternoon sherry and tea receptions. Del Charro Saloon, with saloon doors, wooden paneling, and a kiva fireplace, serves American and New Mexican cuisine including burgers, wraps, quesadillas and salads. The hotel offers complimentary wireless Internet access in the lobby. The hotel features a year-round outdoor pool.

Guestrooms. Guestrooms feature Santa Fe-style décor including carved wooden desks and Southwestern artwork. Beds feature pillowtop mattresses, feather pillows and American Indian quilts. Cable television and dial-up Internet access are available. Rooms include coffeemakers and minibars. Bathrooms feature Southwestern-tiled showers, bathrobes and Emlin toiletries.

Expert Tip. Constructed in Pueblo Revival Style, the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum's building was transferred to the museum by the federal government. The museum, located one-half mile from the hotel, houses over 7,000 works of American Indian art and hosts workshops and gallery discussions by the artists.

This hotel has a number of things to like a lot, but it also has some quirks.

The good: The location cannot be beaten; the hotel is only a couple of blocks from the Plaza, so most will be able to walk there and won't need their cars much. The breakfast is fantastic: A true breakfast buffet, with eggs, bacon or sausage, fruit, cereals, and other great items. The breakfast space can sometimes get a little crowded, but the staff seems to always keep the food coming. And the staff as a whole is very helpful.

The rooms here are really a dichotomy. Those in the main building are charming, attractive, reasonably spacious, and very southwestern: rustic wooden headboards, attractive and comfortable furnishings, and kiva fireplaces. The bathrooms are attractive with clay tile floors, but kind of small. The lobby is comfortable, inviting, and a nice place to sit and read or hang out. If you have one of the main building rooms, the entrances are through interior hallways, you can just walk downstairs to this lobby, and it all feels like a cozy inn. If you get them at the right time, the prices can be discounted and these rooms can be a great value, even if they are not particularly cheap. I think these rooms are called the deluxe rooms

On the other hand, the inn has a lot of rooms that are part of separate buildings on the same property. These are the more standard rooms, and they are pretty pedestrian in my view. While attractive and nicely furnished, the ones I have been in are small and cramped with the beds and furniture. You put a family with all their stuff in those rooms, and it's tight. The ambiance is more like a standard motel room than a nice inn. Many of these rooms have exterior entrances, adding to the motel feel. These rooms still have access to the lobby and the breakfast, but you have to walk outside so it doesn't have the same ambiance.

Parking is free, which is nice. The downside: Parking can be cramped. I doubt they have room for all the cars when the rooms are all occupied, but maybe there's an ancillary parking lot nearby.

Breakfast aside, the hotel does not really have its own restaurant, although they do have a bar that serves bar food. The bar seems to draw an energetic, young crowd in the evenings. There are plenty of great restaurants within walking distance for a true dining experience if that is what you seek.

I have stayed at the Inn of the Governors several times over the past few years. I definitely would return. Personally, I would try to stay in the deluxe rooms if at all possible. « less
