Spencer Hotel

Location. The Spencer Hotel is located in Chautauqua, N.Y., on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, a gated resort community. The hotel sits five blocks from the peaceful Chautauqua Lake and steps from the Institute’s amphitheater. Hiking and biking trails, tennis and boating are available nearby. An indoor pool, basketball court and weight room are located on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution at Chautauqua’s Turner Center.
Features. This 100-year-old Victorian, literary-themed boutique hotel was renovated in 1997. Its common rooms feature hand-painted murals, 18th-century antique furnishings and crystal-beaded lampshades. The warmly colored Monet Parlor features an oriental carpet, fireplace, chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows. Complimentary continental breakfasts are served in the Peacock dining room each morning. The Spencer Hotel can comfortably accommodate small groups of up to 50 people for meetings, and complimentary wireless Internet access is available. Additional hotel amenities include valet parking, baggage carriers, room service, laundry and dry-cleaning service, and limousine service.

Guestrooms. Guestrooms at The Spencer Hotel were lovingly decorated by local artists to depict the lives of, or scenes from, works of famous authors, including Isak Dinesen, Jules Verne, Robert Burns and the Bronte sisters. Beds feature premium linen sheets, thick blankets and down comforters. Select rooms have jetted tubs with hand-held showers. Complimentary wireless Internet service is available. Guestrooms include cable television and VCRs. Refrigerators are available for a fee.

Expert Tip. Guests often hear the click-clack of horse-drawn sleigh rides, which pass the hotel while touring the grounds of the Chautauqua Institute in the winter.
