Located in Midtown Manhattan between Times Square and Rockefeller Center, the Royalton, a Morgans Original broke ground for the concept hotel in New York City, 15 miles from La Guardia Airport. Rennovated in 2007 by New York design firm Roman and Williams, The Royalton, a Morgans Original's spectacular lobby stretches an entire block. A cast-bronze fireplace creates a warm glow in the hotel's lobby. The location is just off Fifth Avenue, less than two blocks from Madison Avenue's designer boutiques, and two blocks from the bright lights of Broadway.
Brasserie 44 offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests can enjoy drinks in the lobby or Bar 44. The kid-friendly hotel offers welcoming gifts to children and soft drinks or juice and popcorn. Parents also can receive board games and coloring books for their children. The Royalton, a Morgans Original offers valet parking, concierges, room service, business center, high speed wireless Internet and a fitness facility.

The hotel has 142 guestrooms. Rooms are reminiscent of cabins, with porthole windows and built-in storage. The rooms include wall-to-wall banquettes, minibars, deluxe bedding with Italian cotton linens, televisions, iPod docking stations and dual-line phones bedside and in the bathroom. Bathrooms feature slate and glass-walled showers or large, custom bathtubs.

The promotions for the Royalton say " a crossroads for international travellers and the New York elite". Plus "dark, sexy and luxurious space" Well it is certainly dark!

The wife said on our arrival that she thought we were staying in an old fashioned "speakeasy". The front doors look like a northern English night club and the lobby is so dark as to be really quite uninviting only because it is difficult to see anything. All the staff are dressed in black which just adds to the mood although they were all perfectly friendly and registration was efficient and well organised.

We were taken to our room and this was when the pleasure kicked in since the room was spacious, clean, with a desk, good size cupboard and refrigerator. The bed proved to be comfortable although a bit narrow but good pillows. Pity there were no tea/coffee making facilities but the bathroom/shower room was superb. An added bonus was that the room was separated from the corridor by a small vestibule so there was absolutely no internal noise from the hotel. Naturally there was traffic noise from outside but this is New York after all.

The hotel is in an excellent location in midtown Manhatten for Rockefeller Centre, 5th Avenue, Times Square and the Radio City Music Hall where we saw the Christmas Show (brilliant!). We also paid our respects at Ground Zero. Plenty of great Deli`s, cafes and a small park in the vicinity.

We were room only so cannot comment on the hotel food or the restaurant but the lobby was obviously the place for New Yorkers to be seen as it was packed every evening and one night there was even a disco.

On this trip we walked for miles did all the big department stores, Central Park, Battery and Ellis Island (on the subway) and found plenty of small but different eating places. Coming during pre-christmas week also made it very special. If you get the chance arrive into New York by train. We did so from Boston and the views as you come into the city are fabulous.

Our stay at the Royalton proved to be perfectly satisfactory it was just a bit of a surprise at the beginning. « less
