The Sumner Mansion Inn

Location. The Sumner Mansion Inn is located in Hartland, Vt., 12 miles from the village of Woodstock, Vt. Set in a historic building in Windsor, Vt., less than five miles away, the Vermont State Craft Center features the work of over 250 fine craft artisans. The Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site is eight miles from the inn. The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park is less than 12 miles from the property. Mt. Ascutney State Park is 13 miles away.
Features. This Federal-style mansion is set on six-and-one-half secluded acres of extensive lawns and woods with mountain views. David Sumner, a prominent lumber businessman, built the home in 1807. The mansion has been owned by only four families since that time. Complimentary breakfast buffets and afternoon refreshments, including complimentary wine, are offered in the grand dining room every day. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the mansion. The inn features a keeping room and music room for business or social gatherings. The library offers over 5,000 books. Personalized itineraries with area excursions are available for guests.

Guestrooms. Accommodations at The Sumner Mansion Inn offer 10-foot ceilings and working fireplaces. Select rooms feature four-poster canopy beds and period furnishings. All units offer private bathrooms. The Sumner Suite features a two-person tub, separate shower and pedestal sink. The suite is furnished with a loveseat, highboy, desk and two chairs with side tables, and also offers a dressing room with an armoire and dressing table. All accommodations are air conditioned.

Expert Tip. The Sumner Mansion Inn is one of the few preserved examples of the early work of Asher Benjamin, an architect famous for his influence in the Greek Revival and Colonial architecture seen in Beacon Hill and other historic areas of Boston.
