Overview
Location. The 1848 Island Manor House is located on Chincoteague Island, Va., between the Virginia Eastern Shore and Assateague Island. The house is within one-quarter mile of shops, art galleries, restaurants and the historic Island Roxy Theatre on Main Street. The bed and breakfast is less than three miles from the 14,000-acre Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which consists of beaches, dunes, marshes and maritime forest.
Features. This bed and breakfast was originally built in 1848 as the private residence of Nathaniel Smith, the island’s first doctor, who tended troops here during the Civil War. The inn was restored in the Federal style in 1985. Complimentary full Southern breakfasts are served each morning in the dining room, courtyard or enclosed sun porch. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the house. The manor’s Garden Room offers a fireplace and collection of antiques and fine art. The inn also features gardens and a brick courtyard with a fountain. Pets are not allowed at the property.
Guestrooms. The 1848 Island Manor House offers eight air-conditioned guestrooms. Six rooms feature private bathrooms and two rooms share a bathroom. Bathrooms are stocked with shampoo, hand lotion, makeup removal cloths and hypoallergenic glycerin soaps. Accommodations are furnished with period antiques. Bottled water and trail mix snacks are provided in the rooms. Select rooms feature hypoallergenic feather tops, bathrobes and views of the channel.
Expert Tip. Assateague Island is home to the Chincoteague wild ponies, which are descendants of ponies that grazed on the island as early as the 17th century. The herds can be seen from several nature trails on Assateague Island.
