South Shire Inn

Location. The South Shire Inn is located one block from the historic downtown Bennington, Vt. Antique and craft shops are available one-half mile away. The Bennington Museum, showcasing exhibits of pottery and a gallery devoted to the work of Grandma Moses, is less than one mile away. The Old First Church and its adjacent burial ground, which contains the grave of poet Robert Frost, is one mile from the inn. The Bennington Battle Monument, a dedication to the Battle of Bennington that took place during the Revolutionary war in 1777, is less than two miles away.
Features. This 1887 Victorian-style inn features 10-foot ceilings throughout the house. Full, complimentary breakfasts are served every morning, and feature homemade muffins, juice, fresh fruit and a hot entrée. Afternoon tea is also provided. Conference rooms, flip charts, an easel, an overhead projector, and fax and photocopy service are available. A mahogany-paneled library contains a hand-carved fireplace, leaded glass pocket doors and rows of bookcases. The property’s dining room features raised plaster moldings. A veranda is available for lounging. Pets are not allowed at this property.

Guestrooms All nine guestrooms at the South Shire Inn feature private bathrooms. Complimentary wireless Internet access is provided in all the units. Victorian period furnishings are featured in all rooms, and seven of the rooms offer working fireplaces. Select rooms contain canopy beds, wet bars, mini fridges and skylights.

Expert Tip. The main house, originally constructed as a private residence, was designed by William C. Bull, who designed many of the stately Victorian homes and buildings in Bennington.
