We are honored that these family-owned security-based business have made Resideo’s security products and solutions a part of their rich and inspiring histories.
Custom Alarm Recently Celebrated 50 Years of Service
Custom Alarm founder Leigh J. Johnson started selling alarms out of his basement in 1968 in Rochester, Minnesota. While business was slow at first it eventually took off and Custom Alarm proceeded to outgrow several locations in Rochester before it became necessary to build a headquarters that could accommodate their growing workforce of 65 employees.
Johnson’s eldest daughter, Melissa Brinkman joined the Custom Alarm team in 1998 – holding various leadership positions until 2014, when Johnson retired and Melissa took over as CEO. This second-generation family-owned company serves residential and commercial owners with its own local monitoring response center. In 1953, John and Eleanor Duffy founded Per Mar Security Services as an investigative company, on a sun porch of their duplex in Davenport, Iowa. Today Per Mar is the largest family-owned, full-service security company in the Midwest with 2,400 employees, 23 branches and 18 satellite locations.
As a truly family run business, all the Duffy children became involved in running Per Mar Security Services. Mike Duffy eventually took over for his parents, serving as chairman and chief executive officer. More recently, John and Eleanor’s grandson, Brian Duffy, took the reigns as chief operating officer. They offer security solutions for homes and businesses including smart home automation, burglar and fire alarms, remote access control, security cameras, alarm monitoring, security officer services, investigative services and background checks. Doyle Security of Rochester, New York started as a private investigation firm in 1919, operated by John A. Doyle, a former detective in the city of Rochester. His business evolved and adapted over the years to be one of the top security companies in the industry with more than 175 employees and operations in the New York cities of Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Fishkill and Catskill, as well as Erie, Pennsylvania.
One hundred years later, Doyle Security is still a family-owned business with John G. Doyle Jr. serving as a fourth-generation president and chief executive officer, and his children Jack Doyle and Alexandra Justis serving in leadership positions. For more than 37,000 customers, Doyle Security Systems provides integrated security management products and services for intrusion and fire systems, video surveillance and carbon monoxide detection. Oliver Wendell Holmes of Fayetteville, North Carolina started Holmes Electric in 1908 after installing electric trolley lines across the rapidly growing city. He quickly expanded his operation to include operating trolleys, and an electric supply and appliance store. Throughout the early years, the retail side of the business evolved and expanded to include sporting goods and gifts. His son-in-law, Luke Wheeler joined the company in 1950 and became the driving force of Holmes Electric until his retirement in 2002.
In 1967, the security division of the company, now known as Holmes Security Systems, was established and became a major part of the Holmes Electric story. Luke’s son, Stephen Holmes Wheeler, continues to operate the family business using the latest advances in custom designed security, commercial fire alarms, and camera systems for Fayetteville and Wilmington, North Carolina.
