World Water Day Reminds Everyone To Be Smarter With Water

Most households in the developed world take access to water for granted. Yet the world’s water supply is facing many challenges. By the end of this decade, global demand for freshwater could be 40% higher than available supplies, and some countries have been reported to be already drawing up to 38 times more fresh water than is naturally available to them.

It is no surprise then that the theme for this year's global World Water Day is ‘Water for Peace’, focusing attention on the critical role water plays in the stability and prosperity of the world.

At a European consumer and professional installer level, high demands are being placed on the fittings and materials used in drinking water systems. Sylvain Baladon, Global Water Product Director, explains how Resideo can make a difference: " To meet the water challenges across Europe there needs to be advanced solutions that benefit consumers, the environment and HVAC contractors in the long term.

For around 80 years, Resideo's advanced water management products have been helping European installers and their customers keep homes comfortable and functioning properly. Therefore, the company wants to share its knowledge and experience by suggesting five ways everyone in Europe can collectively be smarter with their water installations.

Resideo's top 5 tips to be smarter with your water installation:

  1. Reduce consumption – it's not just about turning the tap off. It's also about managing the water pressure in installations. Ensuring you have effective pressure reducing valves (PRVs) protects against too high input pressure, and at the same time can help to reduce unnecessary water usage.
  2. Remove solid particles to protect water system and water quality. Solid particles can cause damage. However, using the right filters ensures a continuous supply of filtered water; while filters with a pressure regulator not only ensures continuous water filtration but may also help to reduce water consumption.
  3. Stop calcium build-up in a water system at the same time as minimising water and salt consumption. Consider a cost-effective water softener solution. The best solutions will use ion exchange technology have the latest control valves.
  4. Avoid costly insurance claims and water damage to your home. Water leaks are a huge problem all over the world, not only can they cause major damage to apartments and buildings but do nothing to help water conservation. For example, according to the UK's Association of British Insurers (ABI), the escape of water damage is one of the most common types of domestic property damage claims, with UK insurers paying out £1.8 million for it every day. And in 2022 Norwegian insurance companies paid NOK 5.6 billion in damages in this category. A connected water leak and shutoff valve can raise awareness of leaks at an early stage, therefore helping safeguard belongings and the home’s structure from potential costly repair.
  5. Speak to your local professional installer for advice. The best way to make sure you are being smarter with your water system is to speak with an expert. They can advise on the best steps for your individual circumstances and what products best meet your water management needs.

In addition to its annual global water observance day, the United Nations outlines the importance of responsible consumption and production of resources in goal 12 of the organisation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.  Zeynep Yildirim, Resideo's European Sustainability Leader, outlines the focus Resideo places on its sustainability responsibilities: "The world's water resources are very precious, and if we don't all play a part in making smarter choices then we run the risk of the supply becoming even more under pressure than it already is. At Resideo we are focused on what positive impact we can make and also how we support our customers on our collective sustainability journey."

Resideo is making good progress in its global sustainability journey and recently improved its Ecovadis score by 10 points from 59 to 69. This means the company is now in the top eight percent of over 100,000 companies from around 175 countries assessed by one of the most reputable benchmarks in the world on environmental, ethics, and human rights categories.
