3 Ways to be a Better Global Citizen

In observation of Energy Star Day, Resideo Shares vision on the future of energy

EDITOR’S NOTE: this is the third in a series of articles about energy management in the home

By: Petrina Zaraszczak, Resideo’s general manager, Comfort/Air Solutions

We tell our kids to use resources wisely and make the world a better place. But how can we show the next generation how to be more efficient with our energy consumption? What small change can you resolve to do in order to be more energy efficient? For starters, did you know that if every home in the United States used an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat as designed, energy savings would grow to $740 million dollars per year and offset 13 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions?

Today, smart home energy management technology is growing in popularity and undergoing constant and rapid development. Not only does having a product with the ENERGY STAR logo give homeowners peace of mind that they can save money, it offers growth opportunities for energy utilities, appliance manufacturers and connected home manufactures, like Resideo.

Resideo offers more ENERGY STAR certified thermostats than any other manufacturer. In addition to creating energy efficient products, Resideo also helps homeowners be energy efficient with:

  1. Demand response programs. Utilities are faced with aging electrical supply infrastructures and a growing customer base that puts a strain on the grid. This is particularly evident during peak times – typically during summer months where cooling demands are at their max. To manage potential power grid overload, utilities work with participating customers with Wi-Fi thermostats to shed the load during these high-peak periods. Resideo’s thermostats are offered by utilities throughout North America for these demand response programs.
  2. Local energy rebates. Utilities offer incentives to their customers to purchase and install efficient energy consuming equipment for several reasons. Products Resideo manufactures that utilities typically offer rebates on include ENERGY STAR Certified smart Wi-Fi thermostats, dehumidifiers and air purifiers.
  3. Smart Home Energy Management Systems. Known as “S.H.E.M.S,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently released its first Smart Home Energy Management System specifications. The EPA will certify qualifying whole home automation systems of items like lights, appliances and smart thermostats, as an answer to generate more energy savings. Resideo was a key contributor to offering advice on the EPA’s specifications. Abigail Daken from ENERGY STAR recently said, “Resideo has been with EPA every step of the way, as we worked with smart home service providers and other stakeholders to develop ENERGY STAR recognition for smart home systems that give consumers the tools they need to make their smart home energy smart.”

Energy savings is core to who we are and what we offer our customers. With Resideo’s ENERGY STAR certified products, you can save today with rebates and other deals, save tomorrow with energy savings, and help make a healthier planet for you and your family in the future. We are making homes more efficient – saving time, energy and money – and offering comfort control at your fingertips. Because at the end of the day, there’s nothing quite like coming home.
