Jamie Quanrud's headshot.Graduation day was a key part of my education journey; it was a symbol of change, a celebration of reflection, and the start of new adventures. I was recently on campus during the Minneapolis College’s Graduation Fest and the graduates’ excitement about their future was palpable. It brought me back to my graduation day and it helped re-ground me in my purpose to help educate the next generation of professionals about the power and potential of a career in the smart home industry.

Additionally, while attending, I was also thrilled to represent Resideo as we honored our partnership with Minneapolis College. When it comes to training the next generation of smart home professionals, learning with the latest technologies makes all the difference. Which is why we helped enhance its Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) training equipment and curriculum to enhance students' career pathways.

According to Greg Skudlarek, Minneapolis College Senior HVAC Instructor, “With Resideo’s assistance, Minneapolis College can now offer training on state-of-the-art HVAC controls and indoor air quality equipment to our students giving them an edge to compete for high paying HVAC jobs.”

Enhancing HVAC Career Pathways

In 2021, we launched Resideo Academy to offer strategic support and training for existing – and future – professionals including professional HVAC and security installers, distributors, dealers, and OEMs. Together with our partners and customers, we're experiencing massive growth in the HVAC industry and the biggest opportunity for the industry is engaging and encouraging the next generation of HVAC professionals.

Sharing this knowledge with HVAC schools and students can help ensure the next generation receives the most relevant and current skills necessary for them to be successful in the future, adding to Minneapolis College’s success in this industry.

“We have 100 percent placement,” Skudlarek said. “It’s not uncommon for our graduates, some 25 to 30 per year, to receive offers from multiple companies. Many students work while they are in school, and we try to line them up with jobs paying $20 to $25 hour.”

To offer real-world learning opportunities, Resideo outfitted the lab with new indoor air quality solutions, including: an Advanced Electrode Humidifier, Dehumidifier, Heat Recovery Ventilator, Filtration system, a UV Air Purifier, and four different types of our Honeywell Home smart thermostats.

Resideo's Impact on Students

Resideo also donated $25,000 to Minneapolis College's Workforce Development Fund for HVAC students at the school, and the State of Minnesota will match that for a total of $50,000 in HVACR scholarships. The scholarship will in crease access and affordability for the HVAC program and support recipients' academic journey once they complete the program, including receiving access to our Resideo Academy online training platform.

"The monies from Resideo to fund this scholarship will go a long way in helping our students stay engaged and complete their academic training," said Beverly Wadsworth, Director, Institutional Advancement and Minneapolis College Foundation. "Our experience has shown that as little as $1,000 a semester can keep our students engaged to complete their training. They have needs to sustain themselves and this money will really help our students.”

A Resideo representative will be included in the program’s advisory committee, meaning we will have the opportunity to offer internships through the program, and we can help create synergies with our other partners – including Building Talent Foundation and its Jobs to Build employment search tool.

In 2022 and beyond, Resideo Academy is planning to expand our reach into additional colleges located in regions where Resideo operates. With new tools at their fingertips, I'm so excited to see alumni hit the ground running into an HVAC industry that is eagerly awaiting their passion and expertise.
